We are all pulling for you, Don.

Don, hang in there and get well again. I will keep you in my thoughts and look forward to shaking your hand at a future IdiotJam. Not to mention picking a few tunes together.

Yeow ! Last month I mentioned Roseanne Roseannadanna’s “It’s always sumpthin!”. The hilarious, frizzy headed Gilda Radner apparently was right. I spent the better part of 5 days last week back in Saint Luke’s Hospital in KC, having accumulated a significant amount of fluid in my legs, ankles, and feet (as well as the rest of me). While they had me on an IV diuretic, managing to pull a surprising 9 quarts of excess fluid off (I lost 21 pounds in 4 days), they did enough diagnostic work to determine the cause. I have a prolapsed mitral valve and some tricuspid valve regurgitation. Two excessively leaky valves.....screwing up the blood’s directional flow through the heart and compromising efficiency.
I can shorten this up a lot just by saying that in 2 weeks or so I will be undergoing my second open-heart surgery in less that one year. They have to be fixed, and they can’t be done via catheter, they’ll reopen my chest like the transplant.
I am so totally and completely good with this. Getting these valves repaired will make my heart work like it should, which in turn will make me feel like I should. Put an end to the excess fatigue and lack of endurance. Throughout all of this, I will be doing as much therapy exercises as I can safely do to avoid freezing up my left shoulder, which I’ll be having surgery on just as soon as my heart doctors say I’m strong enough. All of this doctoring should get me back where I can function again.....and get me back behind my guitar again. I’ve been unable to play at all since Feb. 3, even longer for my harp guitar. The main sad part of this is having to pull the plug yet again on this summer’s music events. The Swannanoa Gathering (and pre-Gathering Warm-Up Party), PleasantFest in NW Kansas, “Idiot Jam” - a weekend of guitars, food, camaraderie where on Saturday night, we all take the stage for a benefit concert for the Garrison, IA library. “We” being members of the Soundhole guitar forum ( acoustictalk.proboards.com/ ). The week after that is Winfield, followed by the Harp Guitar Gathering in October in Milford, CT. which I have not been able to make yet.....was so sure I would this time.
I have an immense confidence in God, Dr. Borkon and the Saint Luke’s staff (even if the food is awful), and you - my friends, family, and all the musicians / guitarists in a global guitar community. Your support was so vital through the entire traansplant process. Let’s just do it again.
Thanks for listening. Don

Saw that too. He was doing so well, too. No signs of rejection at all. I have to say, I hope that when my health starts to fail, that I can muster the kind of attitude Don, (and T-Bob,) have.

Don, this sounds off the wall, but I'm glad your heart failure is d/t leaky valves. Rejection problems and CHF d/t coronary artery disease (eating Kansas beef) are iffy and can't be fixed with knives and a good surgeon. Valves are quite fixable and provide immediate improvement when fixed. Just take super good care of your health from here on out. Hang in there buddy, you have my best wishes and prayers.

I'll take doc's word that this is (relatively) good news. I've been bummed ever since reading this news this morning.

Eight years on my atrial valve replacement, and I'm still annoying my wife. Good thoughts for Don.

Good luck Don! I had the same thoughts as Doc about valves being easier to deal with, but Doc actually knows what he's talking about.
