My Mom, Jane, passed away 21 years ago today.
She was in her final descent that week from lung cancer. We knew it would be any day. I was teaching Junior High a English and my Honors Students had to read their reports on famous people in history. Marshall Spohn chose Caesar. At 9:00 a.m. He read the line "Beware the Ides of March." I looked at the clock and knew that Mom had just passed away.
At lunch I saw my wife( now ex) walking across the quad. I looked at her with my eyebrows up and she nodded.
Mom's favorite drink was a Vodka Martini with two olives or cocktail onions, depending on what was in the fridge.
No matter where I am on this day, I find a bar and always order two Martinis. I drink mine, and wait. Since she never shows up, I drink hers as well.

Happy anniversary, Rob!
The view out the patio door says "winter". Sigh. Just got a text from a friend who has arrived in Mexico for a week-long vaca. I am just a bit envious!
Bit the bullet and got an Iphone7 yesterday. I was at the Verizon store for 4 hours!! Glitch setting up the account with ITunes so after trying everything she could think of, the gal working with me called the help line. It took almost an hour on hold to get through. The first person was unable to help us so transferred her to another department. We were on hold for another hour! Unbelievable!! Got things sorted out though and now I'm trying to remember/learn the features of the phone (I upgraded from a basic phone so there is a learning curve!)

We have lift off ! ! ! !
Just flew the Mavic Pro in the great room on its maiden voyage. Just wanted to see if I could get the thing off the ground. No small task with all the manuals and controls and procedures. I couldn't have turned it on or off without the help of on-line videos (not by the manufacturer). The final straw was not being able to turn it off. Then when I googled "How do I turn off the Mavic Pro?" I was directed to a discussion group where I found out you have to press the button once then again for a few seconds. But the time between presses has to be VERY quick or it won't register.
Everything in this world is so stinkin complicated now. And instructions are meager or nonexistant. We all have to help each other out.

It has plenty of bells and whistles but far fewer than newer models. Hell, I am still trying to get used to the push-button start!

Oh yeah. Let me tell you a push-button start-stop story.
Sue and I go out with some friends. We decide to stop in a local bar afterwards. I'm driving the new (then) Civic. We park it. I hit the button. A funny beep sounds. But the car makes funny noises I'm not used to. We walk away. No key to remove. The headlights are still on. But the headlights are always on for a little while. Even my 11 year old Corolla, I never turned on or off the lights. They go on automatically when it's dark. And shut off automatically a few seconds after exiting the car. I figure that's what's happening with the Civic. We go into the bar for a couple hours. Nice time. We walk back to the car. I say, "Aw-Oh" I see a car at the end of the lot trying to keep it's headlights on. It was my Civic.
Turns out I hadn't put the shift all the way in Park. If it's not in Park, it gives you a strange beep and the lights and everything stay on.
Except now the battery was dead.
Used to be you couldn't remove the key from the ignition if the car wasn't in Park. Now there's no safety except that Beep warning.

I have a story, too -- last year I picked up a Sentra at the Asheville airport, and not 2 minutes on the road stopped at a soopermarket for some essentials. I turned the lights out, opened the door, got out and walked toward the market. The fan was still running, but it was a hot night and they do that. I spent about 15 mins inside, came back and noticed the fan was still running -- except it wasn't the fan, it was the engine. And the door was unlocked because, apparently, it won't lock even when you ask it to, if the motor is still running!

Your last car was started using one of those hand cranks in the front, wasn't it?

Thanks Bill. Tonight we are getting together, three brothers, wives, and our niece, Rebecca Jane and her girls, to drink martinis, eat Mexican food, and celebrate our Mom.
Rebecca is announcing a bun in the oven, so she and the kids will have other beverages.

Doug, we had one pane replaced in August after our break-in. A think it was about $200. I'm assuming we'll get a better deal on labor with 7 panes. The guy comes out and measures, takes the info back to the office, then they call us with the estimate. I'll let you know how it comes out.

That's a touching story, Matt. Good that you're all getting together 21 years later.
When I was valet parking at the hospital last summer a woman I knew came out, and I went to get her car. The person who had original parked it was on his lunch break. We do have a system so keys can easily be found to match cars, but her key wasn't there. In a nutshell, I looked everywhere. The woman was chatting with someone so wasn't in an hurry, but I'm sure she was wondering what I was wandering around in circles for. I apologized to her that I couldn't find her keys. What keys, she said.

She had the key fob for the push-button start in her purse but he was driving and not carrying a fob. He dropped her off at a store and drove a couple of miles to Lowes. When he came out he couldn't restart the car and had to hike back to where she was and get her fob.

Rebecca is announcing a bun in the oven, so she and the kids will have other beverages. My men's bookclub met last night to discuss "Quicksand" by Henning Mankell. I don't recommend the book. But the one excellent quote I took from it is: I've thought about her (a young African girl who died of AIDS) as I have done about others who have died. I've never understood why you should have to stop mixing with dead people or having them as friends simply becasue they no longer exist as living beings. As long as I remember them, they are alive.
