I'm going to be a masked up, Salvation Army bell ringer today. I picked this date a month ago hoping the weather wouldn't be too terrible. High today is predicted to be 68 degrees!

Good morning. Our virus numbers are starting to take off again. That's true for a lot of you as well. Sorry to see it.
Otherwise things are fine here. We continue to have weather that's ten to fifteen degrees warmer than normal but very pleasant.
Enjoy your day to the extent possible.

Had a meetup with the pathologist last evening. What a delight. He loves Travis, Atkins, MJH, Bill Broonzy. Plays the tunes he knows very smoothly and with a fine forceful touch. We got along great, gently excited with each tune the other played. He knew tunes I don't and I knew tunes he doesn't and we made iPhone vids to learn new tunes for our next meet up after Thanksgiving. Fun!!

As of today, Mayor De Blasio has postponed in-person classes for New York City public schools again, and learning will be totally remote and online. This means you-know-who will be home every day—all day. The average infection rate yesterday was slightly more than 3.2%. Oddly, indoor dining in restaurants, at 25% capacity, and gyms are still open, as well as any retail business that has been able to survive.
"May you live in interesting times."

I'll be doing a spit-test this afternoon--C. did one on campus yesterday--so in a few days we'll know (within the test's reliability limits) whether we were infected today. Which doesn't mean we won't be viremic tomorrow or walk into a cloud of viral particles next week. But it's a start on a known-state. We've no reason to believe that we have been infected, but then there's no way of knowing until we're tested or show symptoms. Ideally, we'd also get an antibody test, which would tell us whether we'd had asymptomatic infections (not likely for a pair of ancients). Continuing the ideal model, we would continue to get tested periodically, while minimizing risky behavior.
This is not hiding under the bed. These are reasonable measures available to those fortunate enough to be able to employ them. The folks processing our meat are not so fortunate--which is one reason our part of Minnesota is a COVID hot spot.

I'm still hiding from the virus and not ashamed to admit it. However, we did get takeout yesterday - finally found a decent Chinese place only about 10 minutes from the house. And I do have 2 routine medical appointments that I intend to keep later this month. And I still do weekly in-person grocery shopping.

We’ll venture out today. Something we rarely do. I’ve got a Rx to pick up and we need groceries. After that I may get out the new Ego 18" chainsaw and continue cutting up large debris from August’s derecho.

This morning I learned that the decisionmakers at our church had decided to discontinue indoor services in light of the bad virus numbers. All services were hereafter to be outdoors. Wise move, I thought. All that was soon to be mooted, though. One of the church's staff members learned this morning that he is positive for the virus. The rest of the staff must quarantine. The place will be entirely closed for two weeks, so there won't even be virtual services.

The place will be entirely closed for two weeks, so there won't even be virtual services. Meanwhile, in our courts: Faced with a surge of COVID-19 infections across the state, the Minnesota Judicial Council voted unanimously Thursday to start no new jury trials for the next two months, and to suspend in-person court hearings. The suspension of trials and in-person hearings will begin Nov. 30. The council, made up of judges and chaired by State Supreme Court Chief Justice Lorie Gildea, voted that exceptions can be made by the chief judge of district. Under the plan, in-person hearings will switch to a remote process. State courts are currently using a video or phone system for many hearings. State trials currently in progress would be allowed to continue. Last week, Chief Hennepin County Public Defender Mary Moriarty urged Hennepin County Chief Judge Toddrick Barnette to suspend out-of-custody jury trials and in-person hearings because of the spread of the disease. Her request was never mentioned during the livestream meeting of the judicial council Thursday morning. Judges referred to the rise in COVID cases statewide and Gov. Tim Walz's order setting restrictions on public gatherings, bars and restaurants. During the judicial council meeting, judges also mentioned increased safety concerns expressed by judges, staff and jurors in recent weeks.
