That place could use a good humidifier. This place looks like a spot we did a Patsy gig in South Dakota. Must have been after they fixed it up. ![](https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50889779256_0b4ec79c27_z.jpg)

Those kind of photos fascinate me, in a melancholy kind of way. If you want some interesting photos of things, abandoned, I hope Drlj would put up his link of abandoned places in Gary, Indiana.

Do you know the status of your own family home, LJ?
We didn’t live in Gary, at least not after I was born. My parents originally lived there when they got married and later moved to a small suburb of Gary, which is where I grew up. Gary was just the hub of the area. It was the home of the mills, which is where a huge percentage of residents all around Gary worked and it was where the shops, restaurants, theaters, etc.,were all located. Howling’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, the Monroe Bros, who worked for a time in the Whiting refinery, all played venues in Gary. I saw the Jackson 5 when Michael was about 5 years old in the concert hall attached to City Methodist and in other places for $3.00. I worked in the Sheet & Tin mill where Joe Jackson worked. He sold tickets for weekend shows on the job. In the links I provided, you can see one shot where there is an abandoned baby grand piano that was just left there to rot. My friend, and former student, Joey, who has taken hundreds of photos of abandoned Gary, says there are other such things he has found in buildings he has explored. It is eerie, especially to someone who experienced all those places when they were alive. City Methodist has been used at least twice to film scenes for vampire movies. I don’t recall the titles. I think the piano is in Memorial Auditorium, a place where famous big bands played, Sinatra sang, the Kennedys spoke, and other events took place.

Incredible, LJ. And sad that it is in such a state of decay.

The only thing I ever knew about Gary Indiana was that song. Incredible what’s happened. So far, Canada has avoided much of that kind of thing in its major cities, mostly because there were never any major industrial centers like that, I’d guess. Resource towns come and go, but they’re a lot smaller than a place like Gary.

Gary Indiana, didn't Ayn Rand call this happening in 1957 with Atlas Shrugged?
