Hinterland (TV series) Hinterland — Y Gwyll (Welsh for 'The Dusk') in the original Welsh-language version — is a Welsh noir police detective drama series broadcast on S4C in the Welsh language. The main character, DCI Tom Mathias, is played by Richard Harrington
There’s some really cool nature or architecture.

It was filmed twice, first in English, then in Welsh. (I watched Welsh with subbies). I'm a huge fan of Scandi-noir and such-like. Currently catching up on a series of The Bridge that I haven't seen. At times almost hilarious in its unrelenting bleakness. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2013/jul/30/hinterland-tv-noir-wales Edit - For added noirishness, gwyll also translates as gloom.

A great series. The BBC does these things really well. if you like that, Shetland is also brilliant.

Watched EP1, kinda dark and haven't warmed up to it yet but willing to give it another try. Maybe EP2 tomorrow night. I've seen 1 & 2. Sue was unimpressed. I like it. I like them dark. I'll watch more by my lonesome. We're watching Ozark. Made it thru the 1st season. But she is losing interest. I like it.

Glad you're enjoying it. I lived in the area it was filmed - Aberystwyth - for five years, when I worked at the National Library of Wales.
It's actually a very beautiful area!

The Tunnel is another bleaker but really good, especially the female autistic French detective.

The Tunnel is another bleaker but really good, especially the female autistic French detective. You probably know that The Tunnel is another reworking of The Bridge. The original Scandinavian version of The Bridge is excellent. Edit - Bordertown, (Sorjonen in Finnish), is another fave of mine.

Hinterland is where Sherlock Holmes goes when the clues leave him stumped.
