The Obit Page: The great professional hockey goalie Phil Esposito, master of the “butterfly” technique for the Chicago Blackhawks, has died at age 78 of pancreatic cancer. Goalies used to stand straight up with their shin pads close together, even when the shot was low. Esposito would drop to the ice, splitting his legs with knees together, making a wider barrier for the puck. It became the standard goal tending technique. Esposito’s older brother Phil was a star with the Boston Bruins.

Tony Esposito, not Phil. After his hall of fame career Tony helped Phil found the Tampa Bay Lightning and was the first chief of scouting for the franchise from 1992 to 1998. Met him one time when he and Phil were doing an autograph session at the rink. Phil remains involved with the team doing color analysis for the game broadcasts on the radio.

Whoever wrote it didn't check the names Phil or Tony. I liked both of them.... But I loved the Habs in the early 70s.

I am just amazed that the goalies back in the day wore no protective head gear with the likes of Howe, Hull etc shooting the puck at 100 mph.

My dad, who was a big hockey fan, and a former avid player would tell a story about an NHL goalie (don't know who) who got hit in the head with a slap shot. They stopped the game for 20 minutes while they took him into the locker room and stitched him up. He came back out and finished the game in the net. (Or so the story went)

I was going to go to a Flyers game at the Spectrum back in the day. I was walking around the first level concourse just after buying my tix and ran into Bernie Parent, he of the 'only Jesus saves more than Bernie,' Bernie. I was gobsmacked. I have never been so starstruck in my life, that man had a PRESENCE. Holy cow. Took me a good 10 minutes to get my jaw up off the ground.
