That's weird. My first guess was only one letter off.

Strategy. Start every time with STERN. In the event of no matches, PLAID.

The first time I ever rolled YAHTZEE dice I rolled all 6s. Even that is less weird than having gotten 4 out of 5 letters in place on my first WORDLE.

Strategy. Start every time with STERN. In the event of no matches, PLAID. Itβs also useful to know the frequency of letters in English words. Samuel Morse analyzed some text to get the sequence: E T A O I N S H R D L U C M. He used that to make it easiest to key the most commonly used letters in Morse Code. The frequency of letters of words defined in the OED is somewhat different. That is: E A R I O T N S L C U D P. I try to use words formed from those letters to for my first guess.

I was following the same strategy, but shortcutting, knowing from watching Wheel of Fortune, that since rstlne occur the most often, the show already spots them those letters. Of course, there is no single word with all those letters, but stern comes as close as any.

I am fairly likely to try two vowels and an 's' in the first guess. The answer 'Jazzy' would probably fox me a bit. Yacht might stump me too. Or crypt!

Ever since Angry Birds, Candy Crush, and Farmville I've been very hesitant to get involved with any addictive online game that will bombard me with even more annoying unwanted ads and clickbait. But, okay, you got me.

Why is everyone posting arrays of squares with nothing in them? When you complete the puzzle you are given a chance to share your results. What we are posting is that share. It shows our progress through each line and if we succeeded, using only colors to keep from giving away the answer. John B failed. James took only five lines. Dub and I took the full six lines.

It's how you show how well you did without giving away the solution. Each row is a guess. A white box means the letter you guessed is not in the word. A yellow box means your letter is in the word, but it's in the wrong place. A green box means the letter is in the word and is in the right place.
I didn't get the word. By my sixth guess I had three of the letters correct and in the right spot, but I missed the last two letters.

When I first tried this, I decided to start with words that contained the most frequently used letters to the extent I could. After working a half dozen of these, I still think that's the right strategy.
