Good morning
75F-87F Sunny
Real hot yesterday, the cats loved it. Why would something stuck in a fur coat love the heat?
I spent a good part of the day down in my shop where it's nice and cool. Even got quite a bit of difficult work done and will try to do the same today.
Blood sugar level has dropped to almost normal and I'm feeling much better. I refused the ice cream and fresh strawberries after those great tacos last night. Don't like going to the ER, it worries DaWife.

Good morning. It's 7:15 here and I've already spent an hour working outside. While we were in Flagstaff, our neighborhood in Phoenix got quite a bit of rain. The next-door neighbor told us that one storm was so heavy that he couldn't see the other side of the street. He said there was standing water in our yard when it ended. Anyway, all the rain caused our plants to go berserk. You almost needed a machete to get up the front sidewalk. After an hour's work, that's no longer true. There are similar tasks awaiting me out back but that was enough for one morning.
All's well. Enjoy your day.

65 degree this morning at the Sportsman's Lodge on the Rainy River in Northern Minnesota. Taking a day from fishing, it's suppost to be very windy today. Yesterday we motored north on Lake of the Woods, about 36 miles to an area near Oak Island. We limited out on Walleye and Sauger in a little over 4 hours. We took the longer but smoother route home, on the Canadian side of the lake. We were the lead boat coming home, breaking waves for the other boat to follow. We were in a 25 ft. Sport Craft with a 509 turbo Cummins diesel pushing it, that baby will fly!

The Newfolden Lions Club made a three-day trip to the Sportsman every year. It was one of the reasons I was a Lion. The other was Pinochle.
Opening weekend at the Sportsman is fishing's equivalent to Woodstock. Except we do it every year!

One of our Lions was a pretty good looking guy. Well, hell, we all were, but this guy was a guy that women really gravitated to, especially at bars and churches. He was also very shy and was not at all a womanizer. One opening weekend at the Sportsman's, we were sitting at the bar, good-looking shy guy, Carl, and me, when a nicely endowed somewhat worn lady came up to Phil (good looking guy) and said "You're pretty cute. You know, I come up here every year to fish and fuck... and I'm done fishing".
Phil turned white and raced back to the safety of the main Lions' table. I gave the lady my best smile, but she left when Phil did and worked a different part of the lake.
(watch yourself, Paleo, not all the muskies up there are in the lake)

Chilly in the trailer this am. For the first time this trip we broke out the little electric space heater to take the edge off. Coffee is nice when it’s chilly.

We had just started our walk around 7:15 AM when it started to rain. So back home for hot cereal and hot tea for the first time in months. We hope to see the storm pass soon so we can get back out there before it gets hot. Holding steady at around 80F so far. Meanwhile, I'm tackling the laundry. A nap is in order after a long day yesterday and getting to bed late. We'll have to plan that so we can get a pork roast in the oven at the right time.
I have hardly spent any time with my new book of Mason Williams songs. Yes, he did some interesting fingerstyle stuff besides the one overplayed song.
Choir rehearsals resume tomorrow. Moving from Wednesdays to Thursdays due to the director's schedule. Maybe we'll get more singers, maybe fewer. Any fewer and we may not be a choir.

"Hot. Very hot."
That prompted me to check the national weather map. It's pretty crappy in a lot of the country.

I can't remember what the first question was.

Yesterday we motored north on Lake of the Woods, about 36 miles to an area near Oak Island. One of my closest friends, the late Bruce Kelly wrote a song after a fishing trip to Lake Of The Woods. Called Oak Island Bay. Here is a studio recording we did. Bruce was an outstanding musician and great guy. We miss him a lot. soundcloud.com/terken-1/11-oak-island-baymp3?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharingPicture of Bruce taken during that session.

Back from the vet. Howie, one of two Cairn Terriers, 12 years old, started having some pretty hard siezures last night. My daughters took him to the vet and his liver was riddled with cancer and the humane thing to do was to put him down. They're having a rough day all of a sudden. Losing a pet is never easy, especially when he was such a great link to their mother. Losing a pet is never easy, it's always hard, and as I look to some good in this it's that Howie lived a good, long and comfortable life, and every minute of that life was spent knowing he was loved. On edit, he's in the upper left hand corner of the stone, above Kim's name. She's been waiting for him.

I wouldn't say I grew up on Lake of Woods, but I've spent a lot of time on in. My folks went up there nearly every nice summer weekend they could. Dad had a love for walleyes that knew no measure. When I was young, it was usually a day trip up to Springsteel Resort at Warroad, only a 60 mile trip for us. Not the most scenic fishing as that part of the lake is pretty open with lots of sandy beaches (which I liked, as I got lots of swimming in). And every so often, we would make a special trip, renting a cabin at Arnesen's Resort on Rocky Point (Baudette) for the entire weekend. At that time, Arnesens's was operated by mother and daughter Arneson. Mom told me that the lake took their husbands, both drowned during storms while out working the lake, and that they ran the resort by themselves. Or something like that, I was young. Anyway, I picked up on a sense of the tragic that accompanies working on the water and it made an impression. (better to be a farmer, you lose fingers, not life). I did find this: arnesens.com/history/Continuing... Farming must have picked up when I became a teenager as the folks bought a nice boat and purchased a little cabin up at the Northwest Angle. Man, I loved that spot. The Angle is the most beautiful part of the lake. Any lake. Any where. It is dotted with hundreds of islands and inlets large, small, and medium with rocky shores and pine trees galore. Even on the smallest largely bare rock of an island, there would be a couple scrawny, sea swept pine trees holding on by their toes to some crack or crevice in the rock and making a living. Dad had maps galore of that part of the lake and we made it a point to know, and explore, every island, small, large, medium. The Angle is a special place. And you don't have to cross the wide open big wave swaths of that big lake unless you want to. All the islands break up the wind and big open lake rollers. As I entered my young buck 20's, golf largely replaced summer fishing and the Angle became a winter place for me. We would trailer our snowcats up there and spend three or four days exploring the lake on the sleds and ice fishing. We would unload the sleds at Warroad then race across the lake up to the Angle, the ice was good and we motored! Once at the Angle, there were islands to explore, logging roads to follow, and open lake to race across in formation pretending you were in a squadron of Sopwith Camels on patrol. It was the best snowmobiling in the world! And at the end of the day, the Sorels would come off, the cabin fire would be lit, and it would be time for pinochle and a little whiskey. I haven't been up to LOW for a few years now, the last trip was a boating trip just to show the kids the lake. Once a year, usually, I make it out to the Apostle Islands/Lake Superior as my brother-in-law lives near Bayfield WI and largely lives in his sailboat most of the summer. The similarities between the Apostle Islands and The Angle are striking. The Angle is a little more condensed, I suppose, but the feel and visuals are one and the same. Lake of the Woods is a damn impressive lake, the real big water deal.
