This funny take touches on why, though I really enjoyed the earliest versions of (for instance) American Idol and The Voice, I can no longer watch even the video excerpts from them anymore. Actually, it's not much different watching sports (especially the Olympics). Americans cannot get enough melodrama in their performer's background. It's WAY over the top and it's ruined television.

I'm right there with you. It's totally ruined ordinary competition shows for me. That and "judge reactions" - cutting back and forth so the judges can mime overblown emotional reactions to mundane occurrences in the competition.

I think the sadfishing part started with sports competitions, or maybe just NBC's coverage of the Olympics, starting decades ago.

It seems all contestants now need a back story that can bring them to tears, on cue. I got to the point of watching only the recorded shows so I could skip the crap and just see the performance.

The Great British Bake Off is a warm-hearted show. There are different presenters these days but it is still happy viewing. There are some other shows with a similar vibe. A pottery show called The Great Pottery Throwdown and a sewing show called The Great British Sewing Bee, both of which 'Bake Off' fans might like it they can find them.
