Other bass players have been known to use a flatpick on occasion, such as Paul McCartney. The Wrecking Crew's Carol Kaye, too, I think. I've found that more electric bass player these days use a pick rather than fingers. Fender and Gibson put thumb rests on their basses but many players took them off because they didn't need them or if they did use finger the rest was in the wrong place.

But google it and there it is: Bass guitars have actually been around for quite a while, Marshall. If you listen closely to your favorite band, you might hear a low-end sound that sounds lower than the regular guitars.

I've made a few long thumb rests of ebony that get mounted parallel to the E string from the neck all the way to the end of the pickguard. With the pickup shield removed.

I don't have a real bass. I have a U-bass. When I started playing it I was determined to not look like a guitar player who was pretending to play bass. So I've never tried a pick. In any case, it would have to be a pretty substantial pick to do anything with those low tension fat strings.

I once used a thick felt pick when my fingers were getting sore.
