As a "chubster" myself, I have to say it is not among my favorite appellations. I shall go forth and sin no more.

Good morning, off to Cedar Rapids soon to see the "Leather Lady", and drop off a gun belt for her to modify. The gun belt belongs to my grandson, it's too big and he couldn't find anyone to do a proper modification to it in Wisconsin.
I hadn't seen the Leather Lady, for several years, but called and she's still working with leather and said she would fix it for me. her specialty is rebuilding English saddles.

Overcast and cool. Woke up too early worrying about the flight home. Why? Cause that’s how I roll. Anyway, up coffee and Wordled, breakfast soon. Chickens are crowing, swim for me later. Went for dinner at the Dolphin last night, spendy but brought half home so we will have that tonight.

Yes, it’s fully functional. Or as functional as a one lane bridge can be. The rule is five to seven cars at a time in one direction, then let five or seven cars go the other way. But I’ve noticed that a lot of people don’t do that, so…

Interesting that John James Audubon is pictured cradling a shotgun. You may be aware that there is a movement afoot to have the Audubon Society change its name because its namesake didn’t live up to today’s expectations and needs to be canceled.

Me thinks it's because ole John shot most of his models, they wouldn't sit still.

Interesting that John James Audubon is pictured cradling a shotgun. Audubon was a hunter. He didn’t paint little birdies sitting on a limb. He shot them so he could study them and accurately paint them. He often shot multiples of each species because shotguns can do a bit of damage, especially to a small bird. He might mess up a few before he got one whole enough to study. He hunted other animals, too, so picturing him with a shotgun makes perfect sense. I am not saying that is good or bad, but it is how he collected birds for study. I don’t know anything about what Dub said, but Audubon wasn’t a birdwatcher like the guys in the park with their binoculars and notebooks. He didn’t shoot birds with a camera. He did an extensive study and recording of birds in America and that can’t be denied.

We tend to idealize Audubon and picture him as a sweet, gentle, bird-loving soul with bluebirds on his shoulder as he paints the nuthatch on the tree in front of him. He was a product of his times. He was a slaveholder who also sold slaves, a businessman, went to jail for bankruptcy, and was the first, or one of the first, to track birds using bands. He killed birds so he could paint or draw them accurately. His paintings are wonderful records that no one before or since has surpassed. He was a bit of a scoundrel, but he was also a talented artist. Complicated guy.

Next victim will probably be Johnny Appleseed. Walt Disney may have not accurately described him. That’s ok. I like apples.

Re some of the images above, not Audubon, but I've looked at still life paintings from back then and before, and it's surprising how natural it was to have a a dead bird/rabbit/etc as a part of the composition.
