¡Buenos días!
Happy Cinco de Mayo, a bigger deal in the US than it is in Mexico.
Enjoy a frosty beverage today!

May 5th is children's day here, part of a series of holidays called golden week. 4/29 is the first day off, then May 3, 4, and 5. Firsvund second were technically work days, but a lot of people take those off, making it two full weekends plus the weekdays in between. We went downtown today, saw some free performances and then one paid (hungarian gypsy music), and my wife was there yesterday playing shamisen at a different venue.
Lots of fully booked trains and planes this week (and traffic jams on the expressways), impossible to go anywhere if you hadn't planned and gotten tickets in advance, and there'll be a 'rush' on sunday, everyone trying to get home for work on monday. But the coming 2-3 weeks will be really nice, a post-holiday/pre-summer lull. I've got some plans to go see some things (driving).

Oh yeah, Cinco de Mayo. May it be a good day for everyone. We're having an unusual cool stretch here that looks like it may last until about mid-May. It'll be 50s-70s again today. Here's a photo of my wife and and our stalwart dog out walking at about 6:30 AM. Whatever happened to our sleepy city? Enjoy your day. Wordle 685 3/6* ⬜⬜⬜⬜🟨 ⬜🟨⬜🟨⬜ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Orioles at the feeder this morning. That’s a sure sign of spring. It should hit 77 today. Hoo-ray.

Good morning, a great day to travel to Wisconsin. Granddaughter, the Irish dancer, is now running track and showing people that dancers are some pretty darn good athletes.
Gotta celebrate SILs bday too.
Edit, I forgot the most important reason for going to Wisconsin. There is a ceremony Sunday, where my Granddaughter will be honored for her academic achievements!

Morning. Got the asparagus trench finished and the crop is in right before the rain came. That was a lot like work. No wonder farmers are crabby.
A few hours in the office then off to Boise for the weekend.

Cars heading north on Thursday and Friday evening. Then everyone making the mad rush south sometime on Sunday. That reminds me to remind DaWife to talk to her brother about which weekends she and the girls will go north.

Good morning. <--- See that LJ! 48F- 67F partly cloudy. Doc appointment this morning then a trip to the pharmacy. Then shop time until nap time. There will be a large Cinco De Mayo parade and celebration in West Saint Paul along Smith ave. The only reason I would attend would be the food trucks, worth every penny. Everything else is just a money pit. The kids liked it when little but the grown up girls probably won't go since they'll have to spend their own money, not Grandma's.

France sent troops to Mexico because Mexico owed France money. Mexico had borrowed enormous amounts from Europe during the Mexican-American War from 1846-48 and in a civil war from 1858-61 Then under a new dictator, Mexico said they would never pay France or Europe any of the money they had borrowed. The French soldiers were massacred at one major battle on the 5th of May. So this celebration is about welching on your debt and killing the people who come to collect it.
Grump grump. Have a nice day.

An affront to Francophiles the world over. And the World Bank, too, I'd imagine.
My kid sister died in Mexico, and the authorities handled the aftermath in an extremely callous fashion. I have no love for that government, its corruption (and I am not throwing stones here), and it is not a place in which I vacation or spend my money.

Finally a springlike morning. Sunny now, cloudy later.
Yesterday afternoon I was working in the back yard when our next door neighbor called me over. She offered tickets to a a concert yesterday evening by Lone Bellow, a Nashville-based Americana trio. She had gotten free tickets because their Nashville-based son occasionally joins the band on trumpet and maybe bass. I had never heard of this band before yesterday, but thoroughly enjoyed the show. Their signature sound is very loud harmony vocals, which was a bit off-putting at first but it grew on me after awhile. Pleasant guitar work designed to support the vocals. A resophonic tenor guitar in the hands of a female vocalist was a nice addition to the mix. Opening act was Lindsay Lou, a Michigan girl transplanted to Nashville. I would go out of my way to hear one of her shows.
Muddling about the house today, maybe a bike ride. High point of the day will be picking up Dawn's new ebike

I understand. When I was young I went to the interior by train to hike the Copper Canyon, then a rare destination for outsiders. I talked to the people on the train and in the little towns. They were wonderful. Their government sucked. Nothing much in that regard has changed except that Mexico is significantly more dangerous now.

Mexico. Great food, beer, and people. Their government, not so much.
Lunch today with another old fart, at a Mex restaurant. That’s all, folks.

Two band concerts in one week. City Band (the big band) on Monday. Second Wind band (small band/retired folk) yesterday.
The Second Wind concert yesterday was at a very nice (recently built) assisted living place with a nice open performance area and we had a real good crowd (the local paper has run a couple stories on us complete with photos and our concert schedule... so we are creating a bit of a draw).
It was a very rewarding concert. The band was tight. Our new director (new this season) is a recently retired local high school band director and she has sweetly whipped us into becoming a much better band (she was Gus' big band director at Central; wonderful, wonderful person).
And I got a chance to try out the new QSC CP8's as I fronted the band on "What a Wonderful World" and "As Time Goes By". And I rocked. Concert's end, I had to fight off a crowd appropriately-aged women, and a few men, as well. Very appreciative audience. Very rewarding in every way.
Singing standards in front of a well-mannered swing band is a quite a rush for me. I was so pumped afterwards, I stopped at Culver's for a flavor of the day and an order of fries, and then I savored the day in the sunny parking lot by an interesting little tree that had a couple birds in it.
