Marty, check out the Kramarczuk's Reuben! Our critic writes: "It's Kramarczuk's not-so-secret gem, a real winner: 13 generously cut slices of corned beef, piled as high as the bed from "The Princess and the Pea." It's deceptively easy to eat because the beef is tender and the sauerkraut is mellow. A swipe of Thousand Island dressing on warm, slightly nutty housemade pumpernickel is all that you need to hold all this glorious meat. Yes, it's the best I've had in the Twin Cities."

At my office, you need one of these. I have one of those around the shop somewhere. Probably hanging in the finishing room. Pair that with Apple vision glasses and you’ve got quite an attractive look.

A pleasant 78 degrees expected today. I started watching the 1883 series last night and stayed up way past my bedtime. Good show.

My smoke story for today -
There was an old burned out alcoholic in Alexandria who had lost a fair amount of cognition, lived in a boarding house, dumpster dived behind restaurants, and shoveled downtown sidewalks in winter. He got around on an old bike but later just straddled the top tube and walked it around. His nickname was Smokey.
He hung out in Cyril’s barbershop a lot of the time where he was kind of a mascot. He was filthy as you might expect and although quite opinionated his speech was largely unintelligible. He was a true character and a town fixture.
One day I was getting a trim and and a kind of pushy stranger walked in wanting a haircut. The only other person sitting there was Smokey. With a totally straight face Cyril said “I’m all booked today but Smokey here’ll get ya “. Smokey gave him a toothless grin. The guy looked stunned, turned around and left.
One of those little snapshots in time you never forget and brings a smile.

Oddly, we are having a resurgence of COVID within our church, hitting enough people, including staff, that they cancelled the last half of vacation Bible school this week and the coming Sunday service. Wife and I remain unafflicted.

Typhoon #3 out there, down south--still far enough away but its indirect effect has been to catalyze/solidify the seasonal rain front. So rain now, and again in a few days when it actually gets closer. edit--good reading, and that includes the comments: wapo.st/3J5otQW

Good morning. I'm angry at Amanajoe this morning! A couple days ago he posted about his lawnmower issues and I think there was a secret curse buried in his post! Yesterday, here at the cabin, I tried mowing. I had actually mowed a little bit, when there was a terrible, metal on metal sound coming from the mower deck, followed closely by lots of sparks shooting out. The bearings in the idler/tension pully was gone. Thanks to Joe, I got out of mowing, but mowing would have been better than the repairs that lie ahead. Well, you can be mad at me all you want, but it turns out that mine was diagnosed by me as being a pine cone that got into the drive pulley on the engine. When I re-installed the belt, it was hidden and compacted into the pulley itself. Cleaned out the pulley and all is back to normal. There is a slight cut in the deck drive belt, so I’ll be buying a replacement belt to the tune of $75, but I’ll wait until this one fails before making the change. So your bad idler / tensioner is all your own fault not mine. In other news, I’m exhausted and ended up leaving the shop at lunch and not going back. My new apprentice also went home after getting sick as well.

Good morning 59F-81F partly cloudy. The ES-175 story continues. I have the pickup ring riser templates finished, after 3 tries. If Joe was doing these he'd be done in a few hours. Write a layout program, load said program in the CNC, put materials in CNC, start program, done. They would be perfect and that's the nice thing about CNCs. I on the other hand must do all this by using a drill press, bandsaw and router table. At one time I made so many templates I could usually do them in one take because I was so well practiced in doing so, and we didn't have CNCs. It took 3 tries but I got them perfect now. Parts are only as perfect as the template you make them from. I made them from 1/2" acrylic so they will last a long time, like I'll need them again, but one never knows. Old man pontification over, carry on as normal. LJ, read the day printed on your underwear. EDIT: I'm sure Joe could also do perfect templates by hand, he has the needed machine skills. My comment is to say I can't do CNC work without learning how to use a design program first. I would’ve made them for you if you only asked. I always make them close to the necessary design and then do the taped down sandpaper on the body trick to sand the bottom to the correct contour.

My new apprentice also went home after getting sick as well. Glad to hear you figured out what was wrong without too much expense. Hope your feeling better soon. I replaced the bearingless pully today and also noticed cracks in the deck drive belt. I decided to replace the belt since I had the deck off. That belt was only $47.43. Pully was $22. So it wasn't too bad.
