It's silly to compare apples to apples when I love both honeycrisp and granny smith. It's not a "better/worse" thing. But though I first heard Ronstadt's version of this, I immediately took to Raitt's ever more. It has just a bit less polish on it that makes the emotion a bit more real for me.

Seasoned later, and live: I saw Bonnie with Freebo open for Taj during the winter of 71/72 in New Haven. This song, the memory of her performance of it still brings a tear to my eyes. In spite of the fact that some asshole shouted out "ROCK AND ROLL" during the bridge. One of the best concerts of my life. Taj was magnificent as well. Just him and a stage full of various instruments.
