Blessed morning, y'all. As usual up way too early.
The likely time of Jesus' birth would be fall, probably our September. Scholarship points to a different scene than imagined by the ubiquitous creche.
Present were the shepherds and animals. Nobody else is mentioned.
There were never 3 kings of orient. There were magi that visited the young child in the house. Jesus was somewhere between 1 and 2 when that occurred. The number of magi is unspecified. There were, however, 3 gifts, each with their own significance for a child king.
How is it no Jewish scholars were present? Only sorcerers from Persia. There was no phenomenal star that bobbed and weaved until it stood over a manger. It was a conjunction that alerted the magi that a prophesied event had occurred. Again, how is it they recognized the event when nobody in Israel did? My conjecture is that these magi were privy to prophetic information handed down from Daniel, who was placed in charge of the Magi after interpreting Nebuchadnezzar's troubling dream.
Scholars have sussed out the various conjunctions and come up with various dates/time frames for Jesus' birth. The most specific of these places his birth on September 11 (yes, 9/11!) 3 BC.
Whether that is accurate or not doesn't interest me. Fact is, Jesus clothed himself with humanity. As he stated when opening his ministry, his purpose on earth was to "preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord."

Good Yule! Happy Birthday Marshall and Barb! It's a dreary rainy day here in Florida. Supposed to be like that throughout the day and evening. Oh well, we're just going to go to ground today anyway. Had a great evening with Kelly, RJ and the grandkids. Leftovers today accompanied by armored rugby and Claire and I will watch some more episodes of Bosch tonight. Have a great holiday, whatever your spiritual affiliations may be.

A marvelous sunrise before expected clouds roll in.
Off to waken eldest granddaughter and to bring her and her pup home whilst her Mom works. Kidz and grandkids gathering here this evening for the annual all-appetizers feast. Each family member chooses an appetizer. I will be making my famous potato skins, which will be outshone by crab legs, eldest granddaughter's choice.
Merry Christmas to all.

I'm starting Christmas day with a breakfast of cherry pie. I got waffle with 5 to spare (as good as possible) and wordle in 6 (as bad as possible while still winning). I even had to resort to two guesses I knew were wrong just got get the letters I needed to solve it.
I'm going to walk IceSha in a little while. I'll play lotsa guitar today. The new strings have calmed a bit. Then I may start my search for a new postal vehicle (now that even Claypool has Amazon, my Jeep won't do the job).
Last year while racing out in the country to help a new sub on a route, I spun out on ice and smashed my back end into a pole. The back glass on my Jeep has been missing ever since. I think I found a replacement on ebay for under $300 with shipping (I wonder if it will come USPS?).

Good morning.
43F-52F cloudy.
Got woke up by a cold wet Riley happily thrusting his head under my chin for a snuggle, or more likely just using me as a towel.
Stuffed French Toast with strawberries and Mimosas for breakfast. I only get orange juice as my booze allowance is very small and I'll save it for the good stuff.
Kaiah and Zaria are still isolating themselves so it will be just DaWife and Ayana today. I don't think we will be opening presents until the other girls can be here.
Just heard DaWife letting Simon in which means I'm about to have another wet cat episode.

My wife says several people asked about me at the 11:00 service last night. She told them I'm usually up by 4:30 AM and I was probably asleep. She was absolutely correct.

We will have a zoom meeting this morning to watch the grandkids open presents in Virginia. It seems the real fun part of Christmas is watching children open their presents.

Health and happiness to all our Soundhole households on this winter's day.
Except at 50 degrees and light rain, it feels more like April than December here. The only white I can see out my window is the front door of the house across the street. I guess I should be thankful -- I just read the forecast for Fargo-Moorhead and beyond and it sounds like total blizzard conditions are the order of the day up dere.
Epaul, a report, please?

Happy birthday, Marshall.
We had our family dinner and present opening yesterday to accommodate our daughter's ambulance schedule. Here's hoping she has a slow day in the truck today.

Christmas is an entirely invented holiday. I don’t mean the commercialization and the buying spree the holiday has become, I mean the whole thing was cooked up by the early Church. The Feast of the Nativity was originally a feast day in July, I think, celebrated by adding a couple of chants to the normal liturgy like any saints day would be. No gifts or special observance was involved. Later, the Church needed a big holiday around the time of the Solstice to compete with and subsume the pagan celebrations. They chose to move the Feast of the Nativity to accomplish that goal. It’s not clear whether they were successful or whether the pagans just subsumed Christmas. Oh, wait! Maybe it is clear.

As I said to a friend, Christmas has been reinvented into a neo pagan capitalist extravaganza for many. But we still love it, for various reasons, the most important being family.
All three girls are home. All three are currently single. Our youngest will make home made cinnamon buns to go with the fresh fruit salad, (got amazing stuff at Granville Market yesterday,) bacon, and sausages. We’ll be having prime rib for dinner, as that was the vote. (Susan says she doesn’t hate making Turkey. Truth is, she hates making turkey.) She will make stuffing, though. We have enough cookies, including Susan’s homemade biscottis, and various other treats, to fill us up. Fresh dungness crab last night, in our usual tradition.
Merry Christmas, everyone.

We had the whole family home and had a great meal of smoked beef brisket and pulled pork done by my two boys. Quite a process with the stuff going in the smoker Saturday night and being tended throughout the night. One of the Denver granddaughters made a great cake.
With my new tinnitus disability and my wife’s stroke I was kind of dreading Christmas as it kind of solidifies our new normal but it was a good eve and today promises to be good as well.
I remain optimistic about our ability to adapt but there is a long road still ahead. I have come a long way since September though. Patience, acceptance, and self compassion are the keys. I need work in all areas.
My best to all for 2024. It will be a critical and pivotal year in our lives and I hope to be back here next Christmas in good spirits.
