Jay, my first college roommate and I have been solid friends for many years. We both showed up with guitars when we were assigned as college roommates, and what we had in common with that is that neither of us had any idea what we were doing, but we figured things out to the best of our abilities, and we've been playing together ever since. He and his wife Kathy, like many of you, were godsends when my wife Kim passed away. Whenever we visit each other, we find places for us to play whether it's suburban Chicago or out here in Iowa. I'll be out there in a couple weeks and he's got some places to play lined up. He sent these pictures today, from where we were both starting married life and loving starting families, and still into guitar. There is something to be said for friendships that last so long.

I was able to pick out your friend in the photos. Who was that fellow he was with?

I thought I was the only one who ever put socks on my headstock.

I thought I was the only one who ever put socks on my headstock. That's when I was delving into the world of lutherie, and later backed out of it. But it did keep the strings from buzzing.

I didn’t notice the sock until John mentioned it. I don’t understand the idea behind that. It seems pretty crazy. And it’s a white sock. How gauche! Of course, one of the guys in the Milk Carton Kids ties a rag around the top of his guitar, too. That, too, is crazy. Guitars can be adjusted rather than ragged or socked. What kind of guitar is that?

I don't remember what kind of guitar. It was not a quality guitar. It's just one that floated into my life and then floated out again when I "lent" it to some kid and never saw it again. I'm surprised I had that one out when Jay came over. But the sock on the head served its purpose.

It kept the low E string from buzzing.

It kept the low E string from buzzing. Ok. More than likely a loose nut on one of the tuning gears was buzzing.

No. It just needed a sock. Is that something like "a nice Hawaiian punch?"
