Steve the repair person at Willie’s specializes in working on those. He apparently has quite a reputation in that micro arena.
He had one on his bench last time I was there. As I recall the supports for the frets are hard wax.

It’s been said that size doesn’t matter. I don’t think that’s correct.

Looking it up they can range from 37" to 42". That's like an upright bass.
Sitar will run 27" to 34" but they make student grade models in shorter scales.
The reason for the wide variance of scale length is that they are made in what is termed male and female scales. That is not to say that females cannot play a male scale and males often play female scale for the comfort.

As I recall the supports for the frets are hard wax. I've had one or two sitars in the shop over the years. Steve is welcome to all the veena, sitar and tambura repairs out there. Edit: I get the guitarróns, vihuelas and bajo sextos'.

Behold, the veena: I see shades of Jimi Hendrix just before he lit his guitar on fire.

Baroque Theorbo. I have worked on several. Don't be too intimated as most of the strings are played as open bass notes. The lowest pitched string can be a pedal A.
