Good morning. It's 5:12 and all's well.
We'll be skipping church this morning because of our daughter's visit. This afternoon the choir, including my wife, will be performing a benefit concert. Daughter and I will attend. That's about it for plans.
Enjoy your day.

Good morning. I'm sore from yesterday's bike excursion so I'm going to take it easy today. Claire's got some honey do's for me this afternoon but nothing too strenuous. Be well, be happy.

I can't believe I find this interesting, but I do. This is the kind of story that makes our local news. I deliver dozens of periodicals aimed specifically at the farms on my route. I watch farm fields all day every day and I'm just getting a glimpse at how things work and, beyond the beauty I see in the seasonally changing landscape, I'm catching on to what is happening. www.inkfreenews.com/2024/04/26/should-manure-be-applied-to-alfalfa/My across-the-street neighbor, Kim, once explained to me (while we were standing together in his hay field observing a late summer cutting) that his alfalfa field looks outrageously good after the Springtime rains. The number of bales per acre is amazing. I watch wagon after wagon loaded down with bales being hauled off after a day's work. But, Kim said, the summer hay is SO much better because it's when the alfalfa outgrows the grass. Then the bales are mostly the good stuff. The alfalfa. Kim explained that alfalfa can have roots up to six feet deep. Grasses, much, much shallower. So, in the heat of the summer when the rains aren't as frequent and the heat of the sun quickly evaporates what does fall, the grasses can't thrive. But alfalfa with its roots down deep does quite well. It makes for a very pretty field too. One even a gardener might admire. As Kim was explaining, I was dreaming. I thought to myself what a beautiful love story/song that would make -- the deeper roots of a healthy relationship thriving through the harder times in life that a shallow infatuation would not. But nobody's going to write a song with "alfalfa" in the lyric. "Alfalfa" is a funny-sounding word like "bumfuzzle" and "cattywampus". I gave my love alfalfa I was thinking, I suppose That she would know I love her But alfalfa isn't a rose

The hyacinth held on long enough for the tulips to join in. Red grass foreground, reed fern background, in a ditch on my route. In a month and a half, across the street from this will be 25 linear yards of ditch lilies.

This was before the rain leaked on the exact spot I was sitting….and no where else under that roof. "It rains on the just, the unjust, and the guitar player." -Matthew 5:45

I hope everyone is well this fine Sunday. I also hope that our Nebraska members are alright in the wake of that awful tornado on Friday. Fauxmaha, I'm thinking of you and your clan. We were just getting more detailed reports on the news this morning. 165 mph winds! Almost incomprehensible to this cliff dweller.
Last night's dinner went swimmingly. I may have prepared my best seafood risotto ever—and that counts because one of the people in this couple is a professional chef. She complimented everything, and I know it was sincere. This is a person who does not pull punches. She brought dessert, a vanilla coconut rhubarb cake, with a dressing of cooked rhubarb in its own syrup and we whipped some cream to dab on top. From appetizers to entrée to cheese course to dessert, it was a fine dinner. Cleanup lasted until midnight, and I am a bit sleep-deprived today, but hey! I am retired and I can take a nap!
Her Grace and her French class are spending their last full day in France, in Toulouse, where they are likely in the midst of a French cooking class right about now. Back to Paris and the airport tomorrow morning, arriving home tomorrow evening. We missed her, but on the flip side, it was also delightfully peaceful here without the teen energy. You know I love that anyway.
I have been listening to "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" while having morning coffee. Wife is out with the dog in the park, probably overwhelmed by all the participants in the Brooklyn Half Marathon, who pass by the park. Here is an older shot from a previous event, just down the street from our building.
Enjoy your day.

Good morning.
46F-51F cloudy.
Not warm today and fair chance of rain.
Retirement party plans firming up. It will be on the 14th so I don't have to keep her from going to Uncle Bill's on the 15th. I have the room booked.
Now our usual Sunday.

Rainy, predicted to be partly sunny and muggy later on. Midway through a granddaughter-intense weekend whilst DIL works 12-hour shifts
Vehicle shopping is wearing me out, with lots of on-line searching, checking Carfax, communicating with sellers, etc. Walked away from a deal on Friday, after my regular mechanic inspected the vehicle and found an issue that was potentially trivial but potentially disasterous. Might have been able to work something out but I didn't like the sales guy's attitude.

I’m up. Don’t talk to me about Wordle. I really should have some coffee before I attempt it. Need to do a few chores around here then get ready to pack up. That’s it.

I'm thinking that the word games, in order of difficulty, are:
1. Connections (I'm finally getting the hang of it and learning some tricks, but even though I am more often winning, I do so with the fourth category solved by default).
2. Strands (I even occasionally win without a hint)
3. Waffle
But this morning I was looking at a Waffle board with everything but four unmoved letters -- none of them lit up. I was sure I'd lost. But I got it with 0 to spare.

Good day, we didn't get all the rain that was predicted, but anything is welcome. I have some groceries to procure and maybe will stop at Culver's on the way home. They have a new, thicker bacon that they're promoting, might be good on a grilled cheese sammich. And the frozen-custard flavor of the day is Georgia Peach!

It's raining, probably rain all day. That's good. I'm going to be doing a lot of resting today, yesterday was hectic.
We (my daughter and SIL) met me at the cabin yesterday, we got the water on, everything checked out. SIL spent an hour with the leaf blower.
Mid afternoon we returned to my place, then met friends in Cedar Rapids for dinner, then to their home for a brief visit before heading down town to the CSPS hall. The Awful Purdies were playing there last night. They put on a good show, it was fun, but it was also late when we got home.
Daughter and SIL how now left for their home in Wisconsin and I'm free to rest, and rest I will.

Been away since posting the Bartlett story, life keeps getting in the way of doing the things I want. Lots of rain and more to come. Glad I got the lawn mowed yesterday since it will rain more the next few days. Anne hills posted this on her Facebook and noted I should listen. cod.ckcufm.com/programs/595/64883.htmlIt's a good listen. Plan to head over to the american legion this afternoon and play some music. There are several talented musicians that show up, but they'll let me play too.

Two more shows. One and Five.
Circuses are an interesting deal. Out front, a glittering show. But backstage, it is all family. Once out of the show lights, the trapeze artist is relaxing with her husband the lion tamer while they have a hug and lunch with their children, who, if old enough, have their own chores of tidying up this or scooping the elephant that. Off in another spot the husband and wife team who have the shoot the arrow and pop the balloon while missing the spinning lady act are helping the motorcycle (electric) guy with his costume (also electric). Off in the corner, a couple clowns with their feet up and their wigs off are taking a deserved break from clowning.
A traveling family, whether by biology or choice, a close, extended family. A real family. The circus is home. Different but the same.
And from the Green Room, taking it all in while playing cards, mixing drinks, and telling stories of various adventures from this convention at that city or from that city at this convention, a bunch of Shriners and a small Shriner band.

Back early today as we decided not to grocery shop. We have lots of meals already and if we need something I can go to Cub Foods close by. That also gives me a nice excuse to stop by the Little Oven and finalize the Party Room details for June 14th.

Strands (I even occasionally win without a hint) 3. Waffle But this morning I was looking at a Waffle board with everything but four unmoved letters -- none of them lit up. I was sure I'd lost. But I got it with 0 to spare. Don’t get me started. Oops, too late. I’ve never heard of Strands or Waffle as games and I probably don’t need any more than I already do. I think I may have introduced Wordle here but I rarely do it anymore. Fiddlerina does it every day and always gets it in three or four attempts. The puzzles I do are all NYT puzzles because I lack the incentive to find others. I do the NYT Crossword every day and Fiddlerina and I do the Spelling Bee thing that JohnB got us doing. I also like the three Sudoku puzzles and usually do at least the first two of those. I’ll do the third one in the evening if there’s time. We also do the Connections puzzle. Fiddlerina likes it. I find I rarely use up any mistakes and usually get it in a minute or two. For some reason, my head automatically makes connections between seemingly unrelated things. Maybe it’s the ADHD coming to my rescue again. Nearly everything people say in conversation causes my brain to dig up some long-forgotten phrase from a song or some 1940s radio jingle. That, in turn brings up another subject which brings up another and all of this before the speaker finishes a sentence. So when I see the grid of words in Connections, it just falls in place. I often get the purple category first unless, as often happens, the words have no sensible connection except in the imagination of the puzzle maker. That category is often pretty lame but it still gets solved by default if nothing else. On edit: Connections Puzzle #322 🟨🟨🟨🟨 🟪🟪🟪🟪 🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟦🟦🟦🟦
