I wonder if the orangutan might have seen humans using this medicinal plant and thought, "What the heck? Can't be worse than this cut under my eye!"

Yeah Dave. I don’t know. Clearly animals have more going on than we’ve given them credit for. At some level they get cause and effect. When we had two miniature dachshunds, our long haired older girl would snag the best spot on a pillow in front of the fire in the winter, until our short hair would bark at te window and which would get the long hair to investigate and join in the barking also vacating the prime spot. The short hair would then take over the prime spot with an eye on me to see if she would get scolded. Conniving little girl she was. She could also open kennel latches.

Very interesting. There's a lot about animal intelligence that we don't understand.

Obviously smart creatures. Smarter than us in that regard it seems. Modern Western medicine has a lot going for it, but I think a lot has been lost to time. The Maasai do remarkable things with plants and herbs found where they are. Though they still need help with malaria!

But ask an orangutan a math problem and they will just stare at you.

"But ask an orangutan a math problem and they will just stare at you." Ask me a math problem and I'll just stare at you.

You have to be very careful around orangutans, they’re likely to cut you up with a razor and stuff you up the chimney. At least that’s what I’ve read.

I went jungle trekking in Gunung Leseur national park in the '90s. Staying for a fabulous week or so, very near an orangutan rehabilitation centre. Splendid animals. There were gibbons and other beasties in the area too. Gibbons are thrilling and beautiful to watch moving through the trees. Happy memories.

Smarter than the parents we had that were putting cow manure polities on their kid’s open extremely wound.
Spoiler alert- it didn’t work out as they had hoped.
