Good morning. Up early to head out to Ocala and the Florida Greenway for training to be a volunteer in the upcoming Florida scrub jay survey. Florida scrub jays are the only bird species that is native to and only found in Florida. They are endangered due to habitat loss, so the survey is to keep track of the population and monitor the success or lack of success of the conservation efforts on their behalf. They are also extremely unusual in the bird world in that the chicks from one generation stick around as young adults to help their parents raise the next brood of siblings before they move on to form their own family group. They are also not skittish around humans, they'll follow you around their territory to see what you're up to. Should be an interesting day. Have a great day folks.

Jays are cool, Ken. They're corvids like crows and you can see the intelligence in their eyes.
Good morning, everyone. Looks like low 60s to low 90s here with clear skies. Enjoy your day.

Reminds me of having supper one night years ago. We saw a fledgling bird of some kind hopping back and forth just outside the window. Along comes a blue jay and proceeded to peck the poor thing to death while we watched. The cries from the little chick were hard to take. Little Christine cried inconsolably. Since then I've thought of jays as jerks and a-holes. Not fair, I know.

We have a lot of hummingbirds. I watched one go out of its way to peck another to death.

When we were in the desert, Anita had to chase off a raven who decided that pecking at our patio cushions would help in nest building,
Morning. Raining and the high will barely get to 50. Western OR in the spring, Sheesh. Need to start messing with the trailer as we are heading out next week.
Keep the rubber side down.

Morning.
In my life, I've had one pet crow and two pet magpies. No jays.

We had a big loud storm and pouring rain this morning, in five minutes it was gone. I'm assuming it'll be cloudy for the rest of the day.

I have the house set at the same heat level as always, 67, but it seems chilly with the dampness in the air. But it's good to see everything greening up so deeply after so many months of thirsting.
Not much on my weekend agenda -- a Trader Joe's run for sure, maybe the Accordion Concert (see separate thread) tonight if the weather clears/warms.
It goes without saying that Her Grace of Brooklyn and I will be taking advantage of a Formula 1 rarity -- two races in one weekend. There will be a so-called sprint race this morning, a shorter feature used for qualifying in tomorrow's main event, all on a Miami street circuit.

Good morning. Waiting for Her Grace to rise from sleep so I can make coffee and breakfast for us. I had planned to go to my bestie's place this afternoon to play guitar, but somehow I am not feeling up to it today. Maybe I'll feel more like it in a couple of hours, and it is guaranteed to be better than sticking around here when my sister-in-law, her son, and his girlfriend (who have been living in the old family home on my MIL's and FIL's dime) will be coming here to go to dinner at some local Japanese restaurant that will soon be shuttering. As you may have guessed, I don't care much for my sister-in-law or her brood.
Otherwise, it's a pleasant day in Brooklyn. The sun is shining, the neighborhood is relatively quiet, the trees are in leaf, and it's good to be retired.
millring We watched "The Judge" last night. You are right—hard to watch but very well written and played by a terrific ensemble cast. It brought up a great deal of that father-son stuff for me. Intense.

But due to Bird Flu Angie has not been filling the feeder for two seasons now.
