I really enjoyed hearing the bells. Like Bill said, she added artistic expression, which is a reminder to all bell players that adding artistic expression is entirely possible with bells.
I love Joy's photo in that it does indeed capture a mood. The empty bread holder, or whatever that is on the table, speaks volumes by itself.

I'll have to ask how Flash In A Pan was, Darryl. This is the one Sunday a year I work; there's a camp this week and registration is today. Flash In A Pan, you missed a good show today Todd. Kind of a bluegrass tilt to the music, but some good non-bluegrass covers. A bunch of us discussing the performance, after the performance, all agreed it was good and we would all pay to see them again.

"At my church there would have been applause." There's no right or wrong to applauding in church but it's not our custom. Applause is disruptive in church. It’s not supposed to be a “performance,” music in church is offered as prayer, not as a show. What about "Amen?"

I agree that applause in church is odd. Don't know when this started happening, before my time. Even the choir gets applause sometimes. Not on more solemn occasions. I don't consider singing in the choir as performance and have had this discussion with another choir member. It doesn't bother me enough to make me wonder whether I should be there. There is also frequently laughter, which bothers me less than the applause.

I respectfully dissent. Our congregation applauds special musical pieces, applauds to celebrate baptisms, welcome new members, send off graduates, etc. Applause in these situations is an act of community.
We could have a very long discussion of church music. By both intention and evolution, our congregation and many others enjoy a wide variety of music and musicians -- the variety avoids entrenched musicians and entrenched egos.
