We had a lot of fun on our cruise around Great Britain, and are thinking maybe about a cruise down the Mississippi. What’s a good time of year to take a boat tour down to New Orleans?

Barb & I did a Viking cruise from New Orleans to Memphis in the end of October of 2022. Weather was gorgeous and it was light jacket if you needed one at all. Weather should be decent mid to late October. At the time we were there, the river was low so that was our main concern. It was a great time of year for it, though.

In the Mississippi delta, it can be sweltering hot all the way through September. It can be pretty oppressive if you are not accustomed to it.

"October is great"
As a rule of thumb, October's a good time to visit most places in North America.

I'll say October as well. Another reason is that the leaves will be turning.

I’d say time it so you can attend Idiot Jam.

Hop on a paddle boat on the upper Mississippi in Minnesota or Iowa in late September. Take a lazy float downstream. You will have perfect temps the entire trip. Once you reach Mississippi, hop on another boat and keep on going... Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Brazil, round the Horn, Chili, the Galapagos, Disney Land, Mike's place, Vancouver, then home.

Memphis in May is a wonderful time of year, but by the time we got to Alabama - still in early May - it was 95 and humid.

There are a few cruise lines that do cruises that start in Florida, go right around South America and back through the Panama Canal. I’d love to do that.

Thanks, guys. I figured later in the year would be better, and we’d be escaping some of the rainy season here.

"Memphis in May"
This would be a good title for a song, David.
