I am in tears. Just announced on the Rays/Twins broadcast here in Florida. Nothing on any other sources.
Best 5 tool player ever.
We were a New York Giant family. You hear a lot about the Brooklyn Dodger fans, not so much for the Giants......My father's family immigrated from Scandinavia in the late 1920's. My grandfather was a Swede, my grandmother a Norwegian. They settled in Englewood, New Jersey. At that time John McGraw had put together his last great Giant team. The one with Mel Ott, Bill Terry and Carl Hubbel. They also had a Swedish future hall of fame third baseman Fred Lindstrom. Fred and the fact that the Polo Grounds was the closest stadium of the three New York area teams made my father and his brother Giant fans which was passed down to me.
Unfortunately, when I became old enough to become interested in baseball the Giants had moved west so I was a fan from afar. My first ballgame was the Yanks vs. the future Twins, Washington Senators. Mickey Mantle was booed for striking out 4 times. Shocking to my 7 year old sensibilities. When the Mets started up in 1962 I finally got to see Willie. The Mets won in 11 but Willie hit a liner into the deep left field corner (the Polo Grounds had the deepest outfield in MLB history), and Willie legged out an inside the park homer.
I am in tears.

One of the first sports icons of my lifetime. I remember highlight reels of him and of Clemente as I was growing up.

I just read yesterday that the Giants and Cardinals are playing a Major League game at Rickwood Stadium in Birmingham, the oldest baseball stadium in the US and the place where 17 year old Willie started his career. He had announced that he was unable to travel to the game.
I saw Willie play at Wrigley on our high school junior trip in '64.

I hope Heaven made a basket catch. My dad, who wasn't as liberal as he though he was, especially when it came to uppity blacks, used to rant and rave about Willy Mays' basket catch. It was showy and not the surest way to catch a ball. Whatever.

Willie stated once he made basket catches to entertain the fans. He also wore a hat size too small so his hat would blow off when he ran the bases. He thought the fans like seeing that. Willie on the ballfield was joy personified.

Watched him play a number of times at Candlestick. What an interesting team!
