Strib excerpt
Eight years after last hosting "A Prairie Home Companion" in the city that first put Lake Wobegon on the map, Garrison Keillor will head up a 50th anniversary edition of his radio show at St. Paul's Fitzgerald Theater on July 12-14.
Some of the mainstay "Prairie Home" cast members — including Sue Scott, Tim Russell, Fred Newman and musician Rich Dworsky — will join Keillor at the golden anniversary staging, along with singers Heather Masse and Christine DiGiallonardo.
The Fitzgerald Theater was home to "Prairie Home" for nearly four decades, going back to 1978 when it was still known as the World Theater. Former "APHC" distributor Minnesota Public Radio sold the theater in 2018 to First Avenue Productions.
Bill adds:
When: 7:30 p.m. (Central time) Fri. & Sat.; 3 p.m. Sun.
Where: Fitzgerald Theater, 10 E. Exchange St., St. Paul.
Tickets: $49.50. All shows are sold out. Saturday's show also will stream live for $19.99. Sign up at garrisonkeillor.com.

Does live stream always mean w/ video, I wonder?

20 bucks? I'll wait for the recording to pop up on YouTube. Twenty bucks seems like a bargain to me, assuming it's video and audio. How do you know it will get on YouTube down the road?

That show represents one of the best years of my life. The music. The words.

I don't know but, based on my minimal fanaticism for Keillor (and my insane Minnesotan ex-wife, with whom this topic goes hand-in-hand), I'll take my chances. 😀

This tour began last December at Town Hall in New York, after which GK posted on Facebook: "I do think it was a great show, better than most of the ones heard by millions on radio, this one heard by 1,200 New Yorkers," Keillor wrote. "Life is full of little ironies. The beauty of being 81 is that your ambition is washed away, and it's all about the pleasure of friendship, and that was a great audience. They're not fans, they're friends. And now onward to Nashville, Galveston, Austin, and who knows where else." After the three St. Paul shows, there's a one-nighter in Chicago and a finale in Moorhead, Minn., across the Red River from Fargo.

I wish him all the best.

GK was supposed to be Pat Donohue's mystery guest at Pat's weekly session at the Midway Saloon. Haven't seen anything about it on FB, where Pat always posts show announcements. I wonder how it went. (Pat's third anniversary show a few weeks ago was completely, overflowingly full.)

Mary's show--on a Tuesday rather than our usual Friday--sold quite well and (no surprise) was a delight. I also got to meet Mary's sister-in-law, who drove her up to St. Cloud. Nice person. The next night I went to the Midway Saloon for her gig with Pat and Dan Newton, which was, as I wrote above, mobbed. I have to say that our sound was better, though Bo's is probably an easier space to manage that way. I think Mary's experience was positive enough that we'll be able to tempt her back next time she comes through Minnesota.

As I recall, Mary played one of those front-porch Lincoln Center of the Block shows in St. Paul -- did she mention that, perchance?

Yep--had a good time there as well. Those shows have gotten so popular that there might be the beginnning of some pushback from the neighborhood, though up to now everybody has been pretty cool with it.

I'd like to try one, despite my general avoidance of outdoor music events. I met the hosts last year at one of Pat's Saloon nights and quite liked them. It's a hike from St Cloud, though, so I'd need to gird my loins for Big City expedition. (My country-mouse side has started to reassert itself.)

I loved PHC. I started listening in the late 70s, I think, and, in those days, it was rebroadcast on Sunday mornings. If I missed on Saturday, I could catch it on Sunday. I loved the stories and the “brands” like Berta’s Kitty Boutique, but especially loved the variety of music. I saw the show live a couple of times. When Thile took over, I thought the music, which was already good, greatly improved, but I missed all the stories and humor. I will sound like the geezer I am when I say I miss all the live music that used to be on Chicago radio-mostly WBEZ-on weekends for so many years. PHC was a big part of it. Now, all they do on WBEZ is talk and I can live without it.

"Some of the Best Years of Our Lives" really gained focus when they got rid of the first three words. Great movie, too.
