Don't feel too bad -- the smarty-pants reviewer misspelled "fuchsia."

Nothing would be to good to say about the insightful posts in this thread.

Do you admire him or pity him? Do you ridicule the Mr Tanners you come across in life? Should a man's reach exceed his grasp, or is contentment the name of the game? I'm disturbed by having my choices limited to admire, pity, or ridicule. If anything, I pity the reviewer who is unable to write a review of a performance without resorting to ridicule. The reviewer should give full-time consideration to another endeavor. My first career was in the performing arts -- not as a performer. I was a backstage guy, support staff. Every star in their high school theatre production goes into college theatre, and then discovers that that's the baseline. Everyone else in the department was the star of their high school productions. Same with college into minor-league professional, and then into the upper levels of regionals or Broadway. And every last one of them had a day job to pay the bills. Mr. Tanner's mistake was in not hiring a musical director familiar with the local scene, to help and advise in song selection and arrangement. I've never yet met an actor who was worth anything without a good director. Harry Chapin himself wouldn't have done any better without years of experience and professional guidance from producers and bookers and other musicians, and a few lucky breaks to boot. I hate -- hate, hate, hate -- shows like American Idol and all its imitators, which imply that some people can become huge rich stars based on nothing but talent alone. Even though every contestant who makes it through the auditions is given intense direction and coaching. I hope all of Mr. Tanner's friends who encouraged him to book an expensive theatre bought tickets to help defray the costs instead of expecting comps. And I hope they all enjoyed the show, and I'm sure it was a rush for Mr. Tanner himself to stand up on that stage and sing. Letting a petty dickhead ruin that is a shame.

Carmen del Rio would have had a better performance if she'd listened to her director, but no. She didn't think Todd knew what he was talking about.
