I was a little late to a gig that Paleo and Phil et al are gracious enough to let me join every year, and I wound up texting last second saying I'll be late. Not too late, but late. A lady backing out of diagonal parking swiped the entire side of my car. Totally her fault, she and the cop agreed. No one was hurt. But I can't imagine what this is going to cost her:

I hope she has insurance.

Yes she does.

She appears to be the type of person that once they start something they are determined to finish it. If she appears to be a tad down next time you see her, compliment on her stick-to-itiveness! Iowa at its finest!

Ah, you can buff that right out.

My guess would be that the doors can be repaired, but the quarter panels need replacing.

You probably can get away with new door skins rather than door replacements as long as she didn’t bend them. It’s still a $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ job.

That's what I was thinking, Bill. And it's going to be a fortune no matter what needs done.

I can recommend a great place to have a backup camera and screen installed in her old car.
Repairing sheet metal on damaged cars is too labor intensive to be practical anymore. I’ll bet they replace everything.

I wonder if there’ll be talk of totaling it.
Her parents probably taught her once you commit to a project always give it your best effort.

it's a 2016, so I'm sure totalling it might be considered.

My youngest has a Toyota Matrix, older car, bought used, runs great, generally super condition. She lost control in a heavy rain last week, spun out into the concrete barrier. She’s okay, bit of a sore neck. Car wasn’t driveable, the radiator was punctured. I haven’t seen it, but she couldn’t get the driver’s side door open, which indicates a bent frame. it’s going to be a write off, but she has to wait for the insurance assessment. Real bummer because it was a good car.
She must have hyrdroplaned, she said she started to slip, but instead of turning into the skid, she panicked and hit the brakes. No one knows how you’re going to react when things go south — she was told what to do in those situations, but not everyone remembers. I was lucky enough to have gone through it a few times, so I know what to do to at least try and catch it. Hopefully she’ll remember the next time. Expensive lesson, as she’s not going to get enough from insurance to replace it. We’ll be shopping for a replacement in a few weeks. She was pretty shattered, and we were unfortunately on a ferry heading for Vancouver Island when she called, but her boyfriend and his father drove out to help her.

If the car was hydroplaning, it may not have mattered what she did with the steering wheel or brakes. Running into a heavy rain is why you never want to run tires that don't have all the tread AND MORE those tire people say they should have (even if they still look pretty good). Deep grooves allow the water someplace to go and allow the rubber to stay on the road; shallow grooves will turn your car into a surfboard riding the waves.
