Just read an article from someone who was in Rome this summer. He talked about shuffling through the Colleseum in the middle of a long line of people, in the blistering heat. Not for me, though I’d dearly love to go. Our cruise from Norway around Great Britain and Ireland was in April — we liked the cooler weather, and even though it was already getting busy, (Edinburgh was a bit nuts, and the big cathedrals in London,) it wasn’t bad. I went to Greece when I was in my 20s, in July, and it was too stupidly hot, and too crowded then. If we do more traveling it’ll be late or early in the year.

An always popular destination, the first grain elevator built in Hope Township.

Best to come sometime between January and December to avoid the crowds.

After I finished college, a friend and I hopped in a car and drove. We went from Houston to Albuquerque, then to Tucson, then to Santa Barbara, then to Bellingham, then Vancouver, then to Yellowstone, then to the Twin Cities and on to Washington, DC. We crossed a little bit of North Dakota in the middle of the night on Highway 12, in the southwest corner of the state. It wasn't crowded at all. It was pretty dark, though.

In South Dakota we saw cattle, sunflowers, millet, open vistas, highway exit signs saying no services, lots of sky, and maybe 8-10 other people.

Iceland was similar. The south coast is packed with tourists. We scampered through there in a couple days and got out in the wide open less-traveled areas. Much nicer than the crowds. And we didn't do any of the "tourist trips" except for a whale watch. And we avoided museums like the Herring Fishing Museum. Ate no pickled shark. It was much nicer that way.
In Reykjavik there was a cruise ship in harbor for the day. On the north, there's a town referred to as "The Capital of the North." Reportedly a lot of cruise ships stop there. We drove through that town without stopping. Plenty of ice cream shops.
Tourism is the major industry in Iceland. Saved their arses after the 2008 financial crash. I imagine Greece is the same.
I like seeing wide open nature. I really dislike crowds. It never ceases to amaze me how people (a lot of Asians) are compelled to ruin a great photo-op by filling up half the screen with their dorky faces.

I feel the same way about Staten Island, where I rented from 1983 through 1986. Especially now that Mandolin Brothers has been gone these ten years.

States Island looks a tad more congested than North Dakota. I have driven through North & South Dakota and the term WIDE OPEN SPACES was coined because of them.

I lived on the north side of the island, kind of around 12:00 to the view you're seeing, in Tompkinsville, about three blocks from where Eric Garner was killed. Brooklyn on the other side of the harbor.

We went to 3 museums in Reykjavik. No crowds in any of them. After that, we were on a cruise. No big crowds in any of the ports except Djupivogur, which really has very little to see. It was crowded because there was a 2,700 passenger Holland America ship there along with our 648 passenger Oceania ship. And it's a tender port. There was a very long line of passengers waiting for a tender back to the HAL ship. For Oceania, we walked right up to the gate, waited a couple of minutes for a tender, and were on our way back to the ship.
A couple that we know recently took a cruise to Hawaii and never got off the mega-ship. I don't really see the point of that. I cruise to see places that I couldn't otherwise easily get to. But I do dislike crowds. We have an Alaska cruise booked for next year. It will probably be crowded. Future trips may be very close to home.

We had an Alaska cruise booked for two years and then Covid hit and everything was cancelled. We got a refund and used it to remodel our bath. We call it our Alaska shower.
