I know, right? This was an anonymous response to him posting an AI-generated image of what looked like Kamala Harris in a Communist uniform and environment.

I flipped on FOX this afternoon for a bit. My goodness are they ranting and raving about the debate. ABC is a communist outlet. Fact checking Trump, while not holding Kamala's feet to the fire about any question they asked her. Trump did fine. He said he'll not do any more debates. (Gee, I wonder why?) Unfair coverage.
I also watched Fox late after the debate. They had on 15 "undecided" voters from Georgia. That night they asked these people who won the debate. 12 said Kamala. 3 said Trump. - This afternoon's FOX program showed interviews with only the 3 people from their undecided viewers that like Trump. None of the others were interviewed.
Fair and Balanced.

I don’t think Putin debates fairly but he would be exceedingly flattering and would never dream of insulting Trump’s crowd size.

All's fair in love, war, and (apparently) campaigning. No it's NOT ! Not picking on you Russell. But the bad memes on Vance bother me greatly. The late night comedians are constantly making "couch" jokes. There's no more truth in that meme than there is in this pet eating junk. Childish bullshit. ("He did it first !")

Just to be clear, here's what Vance said: "It comes from first-hand stories from my constituents." Well, not really. The sources of the "stories" have been thoroughly documented. "I didn't create 20,000 illegal migrants coming into Springfield thanks to Kamala Harris's policies. . . ." 1) Not "illegal migrants" but refugees permitted to stay here and work. 2) Here's an ABC News fact-check that tracks the history of the Temporary Protected Status program: abcnews.go.com/Politics/fact-checking-jd-vances-claims-haitian-migrants-springfield/story?id=113844705Or this NYT rundown of the matter: www.nytimes.com/2024/09/14/us/haitian-migrants-springfield-ohio.html"I say that we’re creating a story, meaning we’re creating the American media focusing on it." So "creating a story" doesn't mean "making shit up" or "amplifying and spreading gossip and urban mythology" but "drawing attention." And there's this: "This is what Kamala Harris wants to do to every town in this country,” Mr. Vance said on CBS. “Overwhelm them with migration, stress their municipal budgets, see communicable diseases on the rise. What is happening in Springfield is coming to every town and city in this country if Kamala Harris’s open border policies are allowed to continue." www.nytimes.com/2024/09/15/us/politics/jd-vance-springfield-pets.htmlVance has not only stepped in it, he is tracking it all over the house while claiming that it's not shit, it's ice cream, and if it's shit, it's Harris's anyway. The second-best weapon against such arrant bullshit is mockery, the meaner the better. (The first-best weapon is thorough fact-checking--but when people refuse to accept the facts, it's time to get out the big guns of merciless mockery.)

Marshall, I really admire your desire (expectation?) that political campaigns be conducted openly, honestly, fairly, and with some decorum. We all wish that. But the key motto in political campaigns, and most other important contests, is “ It isn’t whether you win or lose, …it’s whether you win.” No one lauds the loser for “how they played the game.” Lying, and making (often tasteless) jokes about one’s opponents, is a sacred tradition much older than U.S. politics. The fact that Nixon’s plumbers got caught and Nixon’s dirty tricks exposed doesn’t mean that Nixon’s shenanigans were unusual, only that he was one of the rare U.S. politicians to get caught. Remember, the rest of the world, for the most part, couldn’t understand why Nixon, who they mostly liked, was driven from office for his tactics.

It's a joke, son, a joke. And not one of those pretend jokes of the kind that JD his own self and his supporter Musk have claimed when called on their unlovely comments. Not that it doesn't have an edge. But the guy could stand to feel the sting.

I doubt anybody believes Vance fornicated with furniture and personally, I couldn't care less if that was his preference anyway. No kink shaming from me. His very real, rancid racist lying and shit stirring however is an entirely different and far more repulsive and dangerous category of disinformation.

I suppose one could construct a range of ways to be unpleasant--though I suspect that it would not be a single, linear range of increasing unpleasantnesses, partly because kind and intensity don't align.
I did come up with a draft of possible descriptors of offensive remarks and "jokes," roughly arranged by intensity: vulgar, crude, dirty, nasty, obscene, insensitive, tactless, thoughtless, witless, rude, deliberately offensive, dishonest, disgusting, repulsive, vile. . . .
I'd place much of Vance's material along the last four--though his running mate runs the entire gamut. But then, he's been at it longer and has been able to work on both his material and delivery.

I'm with Marshall.
We get such stupid behavior out of our candidates and political parties because we don't demand any better. Worse than that, we reward rotten behavior if it is performed by our side.
So, if you defend the stupid behavior, then enjoy the childish insults and lies. You are getting what you deserve.
(And that is as political as I'm likely to get).
