Susan and I took up archery last fall. We joined a local club, shot indoors thorugh the winter at 18 meters, and then outdoors through the summer. Started at 30 meters, and worked up to 50 meters, which is the standard outdoor target distance for the style we shoot, barebow, which simply means a regular bow, with no sights or stabilizers or all the other add ons that are used in Olympic style shooting. Not interested in compound bows, which are the ones with all the pulleys — way more accurate and powerful, but takes some of the fun out, for me. Pretty much hooked at this point. It’s good execise — you do a lot of walking to retrieve arrows, it got us outside three days a week, and actually drawing and releasing arrows is work. Been making progress. Standard round is 12 ends of 6 arrows each, with a maximum score of 720. I wanted to get to the point where I could consistently break 400, and I’ve done that, and I shot my first 50 out of a possible 60 on a single end last night. Anyhow, good sport for old folks. Not that there are a lot of old folks here. And you know, if you want another hobby besides guitar where you can collect expensive toys, well, here it is.

You did that at 50 meters?
I'm impressed!

Well, if a fellow is going to write about the King's archers bringing down a score of the necromancer's flying pig-like things, he needs to have some idea what such a shooting would entail. Live it, write it.

Well, if a fellow is going to write about the King's archers bringing down a score of the necromancer's flying pig-like things, he needs to have some idea what such a shooting would entail. Live it, write it. And after doing this for a while — I can see hunting things on the ground, as long as they stay reasonably still. But flying ducks/geese etc.? That would be a wonder, that anyone could hit something moving that fast with any consistency. But I guess if you spend your life with a bow in your hand, it would be easier.
