We were at a friend's cabin up that way on Idiotjam weekend and the maples were just beginning to turn.

Still pretty green up here. Give it another couple weeks, then bring your camera.

Damn, epaul. Those are really short trees.
Colors are kind of muted here probably due to the drought. Leaves are dropping from some trees already. The rain over the last few days is probably too late to help. We will head up into MI soon and see how things are there.

Reported violation in the Soundhole's fairness and truth in posting: Beet fields don't turn color in the fall. They aren't allowed to. Prior to the fall harvest, the sugar beet leaves are chopped off while still green by a mechanical defoliator to facilitate the harvesting. No one is sure what their fall color is as they never allowed to reach it. Some old-timers say a beet field turned looks like a rainbow of frolicking My Little Ponies ... Alas, this happens before the beauty of beets can blossom...

The state tree of North Dakota - the telephone pole - also doesn't change color in the fall.

I hate beets. Beets taste like dirt to me. Barb loves them, so I guess it evens out. I did once eat golden beets and they were less awful than red beets. I have not figured out why. I am amazed that people grow beets on purpose.

Though Bill's picture is beautiful, it also reminds me of broccoli that has gone bad.

Some people will tell you that beets are edible. Don't believe them.

Those are sugar beets, not eating beets. Just like most of the corn in Iowa is sent to corn sugar manufacturing plants.
It’s a very dull leaf year here. I heard yesterday that this is the dryest September on record in Iowa.
