I'm slowly working on another CD. Last night, the engineer and I were adding in little bits of color to some songs.
Most of the songs on the project are serious. One song (which people at Idiotjam heard) concerns a cowboy who herds cats rather than cows. That song is not serious. One line deals with how he lassoes straggling cats and drags them along.
At that point we needed the sound of a cat being dragged along at the end of a rope. I tried hitting a bongo with a mallet wrapped in old flannel underwear. It was way too resonant.
The engineer--who has worked with Billy Preston, Ringo Starr, Nils Lofgren and other real musicians--became intrigued by how to aurally simulate the dragged cat. After several other attempts failed, we got a reasonable facsimile by putting a phone book inside a blanket I keep in my Jeep. Dropping that bundle on the carpet (thump) and dragging it (shhh) produced a sound that made us both wince, picturing the poor feline bouncing along in the dust.
We were both breaking up with laughter by then. He's going to see if he can come up with a sample of a cat yowling so that we can insert that following the thumps.
I'm sure this hint will make all the difference in your next recording project.

Yes. Inspirational. Should be a sticky. I've printed it off and it's now posted above my console in my studio. It's making a difference already!
But I wondered why you just didn't drag a cat and record it and I went to find out. I'm booked in for tetanus shot tomorrow.
All the best with the CD. Any clips there we might hear? A tempting taster?

Dave, over half the songs are done, but I don't know how to get anything on the internet. I could get mp3s of them but I wouldn't know where to go from that.
I've also been learning what is probably obvious to others from the start: the more you do recording, the better at it you get. On this project, I've gotten MUCH better at diagnosing what isn't working in a recording (e.g., two parts cluttering the same sonic space) and finding fixes.

Just to let you know, Don, I played that song from the Idiotjam CD for my daughter. She was thoroughly offended and horrified. Good job.
I can't wait for her to hear the version with the sound effects. I won't tell her it's a phone book.

Thanks, David. I'm thinking of having a notice on the CD saying that thousands of innocent cats suffered during the making of this recording.
