The recent worship thread reminded me of an experience I had about 6 years ago where I performed a song I wrote and caught a lot of grief from some people for a self centered presentation. That was hard to deal with. I haven’t played the song since.
Well, the theme for this Sunday’s service is, “Is Life Fair,” and the lyrics to that old song fit so nicely that I dragged it out and we’re going to do it again. It’s actually a very fun song to do. It has “dire” lyrics done to a lively reggae tune. It’s meant to poke a little fun at being so wrapped up in your own problems while at the same time offering an answer. (It came out of a tough period in my life.) I’ve had so much fun the last couple days working on the song again. I always say a little prayer of thanks for letting these tunes “pass through me.” I think I’ll do it at Riverjam.
Here’s the lyrics humbly submitted for your reading pleasure.
Peace, Hope, & Love
Copywrite Marshall Hjertstedt - 1996
Life can have tribulation
Times as hard as they can be
When you’re feelin’ weary
Close your eyes, He give ya peace
Life can be disappointing
Dreams are lost and gone
Ya cry out looking for direction
Close your eyes, He give ya hope
(Chorus)
Come to Him askin’ all these questions
“Why things have to be ?”
Prayin’ He’ll give ya the answers
Just close your eyes and see
He give ya Peace
He give ya Hope
He give ya Love
Sometimes ya feel neglected
Hurt by those you’re thinkin’ of
Ya reach for hugs and come up empty
Close your eyes, He give ya love
(Chorus)
Come to Him askin’ all these questions
“Why things have to be ?”
Prayin’ He’ll give ya the answers
Just close your eyes and see
He give ya Peace
He give ya Hope
He give ya Love
He give ya Peace, and Hope, and Love

see? This just illustrates the difficulty in having "religious" discussions on this forum -- you're only getting half-truths and misleading, one-sided information.
What Marshall's NOT telling you...
...(and I have this "other side of the story" from the one and only time I attended Marshall's church)...
...things seemed to be going just as normal as can be -- just yer typical midwestern protestant church service. There I sat enjoying the organ prelude, and call to worship, as I read the church bulletin. Everything was normal -- from the padded pew in which I sat, to the stained glass windows, the oak cross that spanned the wall above and behind the pulpit...even the "This Do In Rememberance..." carved Eucarist table.
....Then it all started to change...
First the lights began to dim, until we found ourselves sitting in total darkness...
...then the laser lights started sweeping the room and the music filled the room (that organ prelude from the Alan Parsons Project). My heart started beating just a little harder.....the anticipation building.
Suddenly
From the base of each pew, footlights flashed on, lighting the aisle, and smoke making machines started emitting smoke that covered that walkway all the way up to the stage.
The pulsing music was building to a crescendoed, fever pitch until....BOOM! A rumbling of recorded thunder filled the room....
.....then the disembodied voice of the church announcer came over the PA and in a booming voice...
...Ladies and Gentlemen!, For this one sunday only! .... For your worship enhancement!! ... The one! ... the only! ...
...Marshall Hjertstedt!!!!
At which point Marshall, clad in a silver lame' jumpsuit with winged collars bordered in sequins and rhinestones, blue alligator cowboy boots, and his hair in a foot-high pompadour, RAN through the smoke-filled aisle, JUMPED upon the stage, and then.....
.....with the only light in the entire room -- a spotlight -- trained on him, he stood there with his head bowed. the room was dead silent until...
from the back of the room...
by the light of a very focused spotlight, a young woman dressed in a gauzey robe slowly made her way toward the stage and Marshall. She was carrying Marshall's guitar aloft over her head.
As she got to the stage she fell to one knee and, without lowering the guitar, or raising her eyes to behold Marshall, she leaned forward just so, so that Marshall could reach and take his guitar.
It is then that Marshall played the above posted song...
...but of course, Marshall told you that part.
