I have been wanting a new computer for a while, as our old machine which has a whopping 20 gig HD and a stunning 256 mega bytes of ram has me pretty constricted. For instance, I have almost 4 gigs of images from our Maui trip that need to be loaded so I can run them through photoshop to switch them from Raw to jpegs and make prints t hand out to the whole fandamly, who accompanied us on the Hawaii trip. Unfortunately, I only have 2 gigs of free space left on the HD, so you can see the problem. Anyway, Dell is discounting (by $230.00) a intel quad core processor, 500 gig HD, 3 gig ram tower. Question: It comes with Vista premium. Should I replace it with XP home? Anyway, I'm looking forward to the new box. Mike

cosmic, my wife has been running vista for awhile, don't see to many probs. however, some apps need upgrading cause vista wont support the old versions. other than that it seems that vista has just as many probs as xp and vice versa.

If you're talking about getting the machine with Vista and then installing the XP operating system on top of that, this might not be a great idea.
Yes, XP has some advantages over Vista and some Vista "features" are a pain in the butt. But anytime you install an OS over another OS whether it's an "upgrade" or a "downgrade" can be problematic.
For example, does the Dell ship with some apps that are Vista compatible but won't run under XP?
I'd recommend seeing if you can live with Vista. My daughter has a new Dell laptop with Vista and has had no problems with it. The rest of us are running Windows 2K.

What Dickt said. I'm running Vista at home and have'nt had any problems at all. the thing most people bitch about is the constant questions and permissions and I turned that 'feature' off so it never yaks at me.
That machine sounds sweet by the way. How much was it, if you don't mind me asking?

I'd swap if it's reasonable to to. Right now have 2 Dells one vista and one XP. A recorded 2hr practice session takes 1min 10 sec to save in XP and 6 min 50 sec to save with Vista. Same hardware.
But installing the XP as a full load isn't all you have to do you have to go to Dell and down load a bunch of drivers, (over 30) and install them after you finish that.
Vista is a dog and slow as crap.

Vista is just an example of a company making something unnecassery, because their business model demands that they force people to change. At some point people may wake up and stop putting up with it, but it's tough.
Still, I'd go with Vista. Might as well get the latest and greatest, as it'll be supported longer. I have not spent a lot of time with it - have used the new version of Office, and quite hate it, simply because they changed the friggin' interface all around. I truly believe there is no such thing as an 'intuitive' interface. You simply learn your way around one, and when things change, you're back to clicking through menus to figure out how to do things again.

Shipping is 25 bucks, and I bought a software app that will copy all the crap off my old computer to the new one. Total was 553.00 If anyone is intrested, go to reseller ratings, look for the deal of the day for Monday, and it is still active as of this morning. Mike

Vista vs XP
Vista Home Premium works fine, I guess, as a standalone machine. You need Vista Biz if you want a network.
You don't install XP over Vista. You wipe the drive clean and start over with XP.
Which by the way, if you ever decide to upgrade Vista Home Premium to Vista Biz, . . . , you wipe the whole drive clean anyway. Everything. Programs and all.
I wiped Vista off my office notebook and installed XP/Biz, (after loading tons of software that had to get reloaded. Fried my fanny). When I got a new pc for home, I left Vista HmPrm on it. I'm sure I'll regret something.

Doesn't that make the computer more vunerable to malware?
