Hi!
Just got my first real guitar (Martin D-28) and it has a Extra heavy (13-56) set of strings. Dealer told me that this set would be eventually the best option for me and that the D-28 dosen`t work that well with lighter strings. I don`t know but they are damn hard to play with and it`s surely taking all the plesure out of playing my new guitar.
If i`ll take it to a pro to fix the action and set it up with let`s say .11 set, will it be ruined?
Thanks Fusti

And if I were in your shoes, I would go for a setup and a set of light gauge strings -- .12 to .56, something like that. Good luck. Where is home?

No worries, dear Finn -- your English is already better than some Americans here!

It´s nice now, about 16 hours daylight, but it`s getting shorter every day. Soon we have plenty of darkness and reasons to keep fingers warm

Welcome, fusti. I know less than most people but I agree with Bill. Use light-gauge strings.

Tanks guy`s,
i`ll take it to the shop today, to be set up with .12 strings then.
Since i`ve only played electric guitars before and this "acoustic fever" is a new thing for me, i found this guy Tommy Emmanuel from you tube and i really like he`s playing. what`s that guitar his playing?
Any other cool pickers you guy`s can recomend for a new guy to look for?
Fusti

Try Pat Donohue, Peter Finger and Ed Gerhard on YouTube, see what you find.

Bill, doesn't Tommy play a Maton from Australia?

Bill, doesn't Tommy play a Maton from Australia? Yes, and it's not the guitar that gives him his edge! It's decades of hard work and an indomitable spirit, I reckon.

It`s really comforting after all these years of fumbling in darkness trying to master these six strings, when you realize that all you need is really hard work and that you have a rest of your lifetime to do it. The size of Tommy`s guitar look`s comfortable, my D-28 is hard on my right shoulder (after a few surgery's on it), because it`s big or wide body. After a many years of Strat playing i didin´t really noticed a problem, but now with d-28, it is... Maby it will settle down after a few month`s of practice. Thanks

It is a work-horse guitar and medium strings (.13's) will probably be your string gauge of choice before too long. That's all I use anymore. I bought OM size guitars that are built to handle them. They're initially a bit harder on the fretting hand but well worth the work-out. Good luck.

Great tips, thanks a lot!
Just got it back from shop and it`s set light gouge strings .12 to .56 now and for my amateur fingers it feels fine.
I have a another question, but i think it needs a new topic?

I definately prefer light gauge, but then I don't attempt to play in every key either. I'd rather use a capo, and play in 4 or 5, so what do I know? Blessed, but facing wore-out fingers, Dan
