Went to Stars Guitars yesterday and ordered a green Cargo in RT finish. Jim also ordered the same. Now the hard part. 8 weeks before I get it. The sound is great for a small guitar. I also got the electronics package with it. Jim said he can't keep them in stock. I asked about the strings and he said they have tried others but the strings that come with it are the best sounding.

Congrats -- yet another member of the Cargo Cult. Lots of sound in those little carbon boxes.
I shall presume we will meet you and your Cargo at IdiotJam

Congratulations, Bob. I knew you were looking, but wow. Is this the one? I'm just guessing, I pulled that off the Stars site. Either way, I'm in Cedar Rapids a lot. When it comes in I'd be happy to pick it up and keep it for a week or so to make sure it's a good one then you can come over and get it. And since it's a Cargo, I can just toss it in the back of my truck.

Congrats on the new guitar. Boy, I thought for sure once I got my lil Martin I would be happy with her forever. I love that guitar but I gotta say, I sure would love to add a nice red Cargo to my corral.
Forever struggling with barre chords and now, with the addition of a keyboard/vocalist to our little group, I find myself unable to work around my struggles with those chords. I am seriously considering buying an electric guitar to use alternately with my Martin.
So...is the purchase of a Cargo AND an electric guitar grounds for divorce?

You can get those inexpensive Fender sets, Cyndi - might be good for what you want. If you get a chance, check out a Cargo - the shorter scale makes them easier to play, might help with the barre chords, and you can get them with pickup.
I had to sell a bunch of guitars to keep the peace here. Which was okay, a lot of junk that needed to go, anyway, with the exception of my old Ovation nylon string, which hurt a bit. Oh well, went to an earnest young fellow who was going to play the heck out of it, and that's better than sitting in a case unplayed at my place.

Rick, is the Cargo scale shorter than my Martin 000-16?
For those of you who have them, how do you think their playablity compares with the Martin I have?
I would get the Cargo with the electronics. Today I was out and about with my Martin. I was thinking how nice it would have been to have that Cargo...so I could haul a gig bag instead of the heavier case for one thing...and not have to worry about the elements. The more I think about it, the more I want one! While I am the sort that likes my wood guitar to show off its wood, I kinda like the idea of getting one of those Cargos in red!
I wonder if there is anywhere in the Milwaukee area where I could give one a try.

The Cargo scale is 22-3/4"...considerably shorter than a 000-16 (GT?), which is the Martin standard of 25.4".
The Cargo neck is quite slim, so depending on what *you* prefer, it might be good...or not.
"Playability" is a wide-scope kind of word...it encompasses neck profile, fingerboard radius, fret height, action as measured at the 12th fret, nut adjustments, and more.
The lower tension of the short scale means that the strings are floppier, and at any given tuning the action might need to be a little higher, based on your right hand attack. The higher action is pretty much offset by the lower tension, in regards to ease of fretting any given string or note.
I hope this sheds some light on some of the variables...

Thanks Larry!
Sorry if I hijacked your thread, Chef! Let us know when you get your Cargo and what your impressions are! As you can see, I for one am very interested. I know Billeditor has given high marks to his Cargo but methinks he can play just about anything and make it sound good!

Resolve, your martin 000-16 is not a short scale, Martin 000 and 00 short scales start at the 18 series and above, so you scale is 25.4 not 29.4. The cargo scale is 22.75, about as short as it gets these day for a good steel stringed guitar. Larrivee Parlors are 24 inch scales. Playability of the cargo is very good, has a 1 3/4 nut. The distance between frets is shorter so it depends on your hands and how they will deal with less space. String tension will be very easy on your hands and it will be easier to do certain chords.

They are certainly one of the nicest playing guitars I have every played. I'm finding certain stretches/chords that were a bit tough much simpler. And yes, for hauling them around - it can't be beat.
But try one out, if you can. They certainly do seem to run out of the shops.
I really like the new tobacco sunbursts. They in a gloss finish, now, too, but that's an extra couple of hundred. The RT, (road tough) finish is great for durability.

If you happen to find one at your house, remember that is the one you offered to pick up for me. Thanks so much. Now if you could just pack it up and send it, that would be ever so nice of you.

Ah, I do have a CA guitar (as in Composite Acoustics) that is true.
But while all Cargos are CA's, not all CA's are Cargos.
Mine is the GX Performer Gusher Musher 9000.
