There is such a fine line on scale and neck thickness. Larry Pattis has been helping me with a great ear to my whining about my hands and what to do.... I played my cargo and my larrivee the other night and the cargo, a shorter scale was not as comfortable to me that night....so was it the fact that there is less space between frets (maybe), was it the neck being thinner, but not that thinner than the Larrivee??? I know one thing for sure, or almost for sure at this point, and this will make Larry smile, my 00 is probably just no longer the right guitar for me. I have not yet made the decision to sell it because of the tone and the sentimental reasons we hold onto things, I am giving it one last try with 10's, and I do not expect much but will try..... oh well, the saga continues.

People in pain with their guitars never makes me smile, Joel! It is not insignificant to note that the Larrivée, with a scale 1-1/4" longer than the Cargo, was for some reason easier on your hands the other night....and IMO it's not the closer frets that would *cause* a problem. Putting 10s on the 00 Martin may or may not make a difference for comfortableness (or "playability") with your situation...but the guitar-top will, with near certainty, want more tension than the xx-light gauge strings will provide. It was hard for me (as we have discussed privately) to let go of the standard scale, and then short scale guitars...but I am pretty happy at the 24" scale, and with a beefier neck than the Cargo on both the parlor and the Wolsons. I might eventually go shorter than 24" simply for left-hand performance issues...and there's always the chance that health will force this, as well. I'm trying to learn to not become overly attached to my guitars. Attached, yes...but not overly attached.

While feeling a bit foolish for not knowing the specs of my own guitar does anyone know the nut width of that Martin I have (000-16 GT)? I have been considering an electric guitar to give me some options to maybe help me accomplish some things that are hard for me on the Martin. I'm wondering now whether a Cargo might meet those needs. Thanks, Marshall for the info on Madison Music. I will probably wait til summer (when I am not working) so that when/if one comes in I can respond right away with a drive over there.

Thanks Joel. You are very sweet to find the specs. Ahhh, I do love my lil Martin! Turns out then that my Martin's neck is narrower than the Cargo. Wonder how much of a difference that would make for me. Guess I really just have to try one.

Remember that by and large you play the string spacing at the nut (and bridge), and not the overall nut width. If you try the Cargo and it seems uncomfortable there are several thoughts you might have: 1) Doesn't work for me, forget it. 2) Doesn't feel right, compared to my Martin, but maybe I'll get used to it. 3) Doesn't feel right, but I can have a new nut made to match identically the string spacing on my Martin. 4) Wow, this feels great. 5) What difference...I don't feel any difference. I will add (as per my opening comment) that the Cargo has a 2-1/4" bridge spacing, and this is a full 1/8" difference compared to your Martin. This is a really big difference, and it will have some impact under both your right and left hands...add this in to the nut spacing difference, and you will be playing a very different feeling guitar when you first pick up a Cargo. So while you can bring the spacing in at the nut pretty easily (with a new nut), it would be considerably more work to accurately bring the spacing in at the bridge pin holes. It can be done, but it won't look all that great. This would be done by notching new slots in the bridge pin holes to bring each string in a little closer to the center-line of the guitar. It may be that #2, #4 or #5 above is what you need to consider when you do get a chance to play a Cargo.

Cyndy, the 1 3/4" neck width is very popular amongst finger pickers, as that and the wider bridge spacing give more room for the fight hand fingers to move. The slimmer neck is more popular with flatpickers. That being, folks use both for either. Electric guitars typically have a slimmer neck - they tend not to be fingerpicked, but that again is a generalization.
And Larry's correct - there are so many variables, even within brands. Martin has 1 11/16, 1 3/4, 1 13/16, and 1 7/8" wide nuts. They have various neck profiles, from a deep V, (very thick,) to the slimmer 'C' type, which I think is what yours is. Both my other guitars have 1 11/16" nuts - one is a thicker neck though, one is very much a copy of a Martin. I like them all, but mileage will vary. You just have to try them, and don't be shy about a good long try.
The thing with electrics you'll find, is they are all over the map in tone. So, try a bunch of those, too. And don't be afraid to turn them up in the store - you're playing with a drummer, which implies some volume.

You know, I owned a Martin once for a couple of days. It was two years ago or so, and I fell for the same model as Cyndy owns, I think, only it had onboard electronics and even an onboard tuner.
I thought it was a great value for about $1.6K or so, and I had some tax return money coming......
Anyhoo, I got it home (from Willie's American Guitars in St. Paul) and the more I played it, the more I realized that some toxic fumes were coming out of the soundhole and playing havoc with my allergies, and I wound up bringing it back and paying a 2 percent restocking fee.
Sigh.......

Bill, it very well might have been from the glue used in the case...Martin has had some real issues with this and many reports on the UMGF.

On a 1-3/4" nut width I have seen E-to-E spacings of 1-15/32" (Goodall), 1-1/2" (Tippin), and 1-17/32" (Martin). This 1/16" overall difference (between Goodall and Martin) on the same nut width is not insignificant. "...don't be shy about a good long try" is right. ...and I don't go anywhere without my little 6" metal rule, so I can rely on both the feel and real numbers when it comes to stuff like this.

Thanks Larry! Sorry if I hijacked your thread, Chef! Let us know when you get your Cargo and what your impressions are! As you can see, I for one am very interested. I know Billeditor has given high marks to his Cargo but methinks he can play just about anything and make it sound good! What? When did I buy a Cargo??? I am always the last one to find out these things! Check under the Esteban.

I just checked their website. As of 3/7 they had one Cargo in their inventory. I emailed them for their price..they only listed the list price (over $1200 and it didn't say it had the electronics).
