Dang! I guess USC's line all came down with Montezuma's Revenge after all.
Looks like Michigan/Ohio State for the national title.
How cool is that?
Go Blue!

YAAAAAY! I think this means LSU gets to wreak vengeance on their whining nemesis (USC) in the Rose Bowl. I think it's an interesting matchup. USC gets the considerable advantage of the home field, a place LSU's never been, ever.
The rematch will be a better game, I think. It would have been Ohio State in a romp over the Trojans.

If Michigan wins, it will present the twisted scenario of 2 teams whose only loses are to each other.

If Michigan wins, do that have to play "best 2 out of 3 ?"
I have a feeling Florida fans are going to be griping that they deserve a shot at Ohio State.

No griping from Florida fans. I imagine that'll be a good game. I can't pick a winner.
USC and Michigan in the Rose Bowl? Michigan comfortably but not a romp.
LSU vs. Notre Dame in the Sugar? Boring lopsided waxifacation of the Irish.
Yeah, yeah, a playoff system of some kind will be forthcoming.

I do think that Florida is the better team than Michigan. Michigan would probably be no better than 10-2 right now if they played Florida's schedule. Both teams had a couple of non-conference cream puffs on their schedule, but Michigan, being in the Big 10, had quite a few in-conference puffs as well. (Ok, so did Florida, but top to bottom, the SEC is the strongest conference in America this year.) Meanwhile, Michigan's biggest win was against an over-hyped Notre Dame squad that got embarassed by a USC team that couldn't score double-digits against its crosstown rivals the next week. All that said, I think not having a conference championship game to impress the voters and computers one last time was the difference. Florida got big quality points for beating a top-12 team by 10 points to end their year. It's not Michigan's fault they were stuck without a game to play yesterday, but it made a difference.
But all of this is a moot point, and for the third time in four years, the BCS has failed to offer anything resembling a fair determination of the national champ. Even Florida's coach, Urban Meyer, who's team got the benefit of the BCS craziness, was speaking out tonight about how there needs to be a playoff system in place.
My pick: Florida in a shocker, 31-27.

The conference championship can put the shoe firmly on the other foot, so I hope Michigan isn't griping too hard. It's just a game, right?? RIGHT?

I'd say playing the number 1 team in the country, who happens to be your conference rival, to within 3 points qualifies as a conference championship for all intents and purposes.
Best of luck to Florida, although I don't hold out much hope for them.
Of course, I'll be rooting Big 10 all the way. All the pressure is on Florida now. If it's not a victory or razor thin loss, the wrong team went.
And Evan,
Of course it's just a game.
Doesn't prevent me from hoping OSU makes Florida scream like schoolgirls.

Y'all have no idea how hard it is for this Georgia girl to say "go Gators". It takes everything I have to even write it, much less say it, but my heart is with the SEC, I just don't bleed blue and orange.

It is almost every year, but that didn't seem to matter when Auburn went undefeated a couple years ago and got to watch the BCS Championship game from home.
Gene Wojciechowski made a good point too.
The strength of schedule is part of the equation, nothing more. Tuberville's 2004 team had the strongest strength of schedule, but didn't make it.
You want to give the Gators the edge based on scheduling? Fair enough, though you could argue that Florida didn't exactly beat vintage Alabama, Georgia and Florida State teams this year, and Central Florida and Division I-AA Western Carolina were dreadful.
And look at the one loss each suffered by Florida and Michigan on their schedules. You tell me which defeat was more impressive: the Gators' 10-point road loss to an Auburn team that finished the season No. 9 in the BCS standings? Or the Wolverines' three-point road loss to an Ohio State now favored to win the national championship?
The BCS system rewarded Florida for finishing its season with wins at FSU and against Arkansas at the SEC championship in Atlanta.
And the BCS penalized Michigan twice for being on the wrong end of the calendar: once when USC moved to No. 2 after beating Notre Dame (even though Michigan beat the Irish worse), and now, when Florida overtook the Wolverines (even though U of M's season ended two weeks ago).
How can you call this a "system" when Florida belongs to a league that plays a conference championship, and Michigan doesn't? How can you call it a quasi-playoff when Michigan drops twice in the standings without losing a game?

You can bet your sweet bippy that I do!
I have no problem with the University of Florida. It's their moany, whiney, limp-wristed, anemic-looking, sissy-faced, granola-bar-munchin' fans that I can't stand.

Good luck to both of them.

Gene Wojciechowski needs to look at who Michigan played the game before each of their big games (ND & OSU). Ball State and Central Michigan. It's easy to play your big games when you can take a week off, hide the playbook, and scrimmage against lil' fellas. Conversely, Auburn was the last game in a string of 5 straight games Florida played against bowl teams. And they really shouldn't have lost it, if the officiating was fair. They lost a fumble that wasn't a fumble at Auburn's 6 yard line in the 4th quarter as they were driving for the go-ahead score. As it was, they lost by 3 points. (Plus another 7 on a fumble returned for a TD on a desperation multiple-lateral play they tried at the end of the game.) And if we're comparing 1-loss teams based on who they lost to, remember that in 2000 Florida State and Miami both had 1 loss. Miami beat Florida State, who was #1 in the nation at the time. But Florida State went to the championship game. But I'm pretty sure you were ok with that one, weren't you Cribbs?

Doc, it's obvious Auburn's problem is that it's not Catholic enough. The Sugar Bowl dipped down 3 spots below them to pick a #11 Notre Dame team to play LSU. Or I guess it could just be true that nobody wants to see a rematch of a highly competitive regular season game in a BCS bowl game. Either way, it sucks that you guys got hosed.
