Evacuation orders released here for low lying areas or anyone in the flood zones, which I'm not. Still nothing major happening here, rain and gusts to 40 but that's pretty normal. I heard the bridge to the mainland was closed but it's not on their website yet anyway. That would make north the only evacuation route and that would be dumb.

Atlantic City mostly under water, according to an NBC blurb I just saw. Financially, or literally?

Heh - perhaps both, but literally, at the moment... and Sandy is still a couple hours out. Guess I'm glad I don't live there anymore.

After keeping our office open today as we all suspected they are sending us home at 1:00 pm right as conditions worsen. I hope no one gets blown off of the road or has a tree fall on their car.

I was watching the weather channel and it was disturbing how excited the meteorologists were getting as they talked about how bad the storm was going to be. Weather porn?

Lots of flooding in lower lying areas here. The barrier islands are under water and some places on the bay side too. My golf buddy who lives right on the water is surrounded by water but his house is up on an 8 block high foundation. Taking his dog out for a walk is going to be a problem he says. So far we're just wet and I'll have some branches to pick up but that's nothing new with all these pine trees. Apparently there's a NCL cruise ship out of New York moored in the bay waiting the storm out. Don't know if it was on it's way in or out but I think they usually leave on Sundays so probably out unless it's really late getting back from its last cruise. Another case of they probably thought they were safer at sea than at a dock in New York.

So what is it about this storm that makes it so bad? right now it is a Cat 1 hurricane with winds of 85mph. Katrina was Cat 3 and Ike was Cat 4. Ike has winds of 145mph. is Sandy expected to get worse as it gets closer? Or is the issue one that folks in New Jersey aren't as used to hurricanes as folks along the Gulf coast are?

I'm thinking the later. Plus there will be tons of rain. It's slow moving. And it's BIG in breadth. And with a high tide, the storm surge will have considerably higher waves than those areas have seen in probably 100 years.

So unlike the Gulf, the North-East just has never had to deal with a storm like this.

It's not about windspeed which btw is now increased to 90 mph. The central pressure of Sandy is a near record low of 943 millibars. Also this is a huge nor'easter that just happens to have a hurricane at its core. This thing is 1000 mi in diameter.

Too bad we don't have President Romney in office right now, so we could tackle this national emergency with state agencies, not FEMA.

Is this the appropriate time for Limbaugh/Beck parodies. It was a parody, no?

Perhaps I was a little testy to post in haste. At the time I was reading the thread, the radio was reporting deaths that have happened and devastation that is coming. I'm worried for friends in the hurricanes path. Perhaps another thread would be more suitable for the politicking in this instance. Sorry if I sound ridiculously prissy and uptight. I'll understand if it is thought that I am being a bit precious and won't get censorious again.

Perhaps another thread would be more suitable for the politicking in this instance. I thought you made a good point, James. I can't imagine how awful it must be for those who have been watching this come in, heard the dire predictions and now have to just hang on tight and hope for the best.
