Rachel (she's 23) and her boyfriend are very, very serious about "Bassnectar"...the stage name for this guy (who has a lot of energy for jumping around and some very long hair).
I'm not clear on exactly what he is doing with all those buttons and controls. Rachel and Ryan assure me he isn't just "pushing play" and then bopping around as the pre-recorded stuff plays. They say there is a lot of talent involved. And lots of lights. And lots of videos. And I'm reliably informed that there is so much bass (the name's "Bassnectar" for a reason) that crummy iPhone videos don't begin to capture the intensity.
They traveled to see this act at Red Rocks last year, and are heading to Kansas City to see it again on the 30th. PaulS, this might be quite the opportunity for you.

Jeff, I think you are going to have to go Charlie Chan. Like #1 daughter, #4 daughter etc.

If the music deal doesn't work out maybe he could repackage himself as an exercise guru. That looks pretty aerobic.

And yet he can still answer the phone in the middle of it. Impressive. Must be a hell of a ring tone.

It may not be too late for an intervention.

I saw a set of his at a festival a few years ago. Not usually my sort of a thing but I was chercheing une femme. Helluva good show.

With all that loud bass going on what if he accidentally hits the Brown Note and everybody fills their shorts?

Obviously, I have no performing skills. Is it too late to sell my guitars to buy projection equipment, notepads, and turntables to reproduce this.... ahhhh music?

It's um, well, I guess... musical?
My girls like some of this stuff. Fortunately, they seem to like music that people actually play more. They may not have learned to play instruments, but I have to be happy about something.

That was awful. Worse than awful, actually.

That was awful. Worse than awful, actually. That the likes of us think so is largely the point. As always.

It reminds me very much of a Jimi Hendrix concert I went to at the Electric Factory in Philly, back when we were both alive.

I get the appeal of this stuff....it has a driving bass line and, really, what else do you need? Kick drum and a bass player and the girls will dance, and where the girls are dancing, the boys will show up.
I just wish I had a better understanding of what he's doing at the console. I mean, is he pushing buttons in time with the music and somehow making the music? I have no idea. Obviously much or all of this is pre-recorded. But what happens after that?

There is some creativity there. It would be fun to mess with that stuff, and I can see the power from making all that volume.
I can also see how drugs and alcohol could very much enhance the experience.
Which was kind of like going to see the Grateful Dead, now that it comes to it.....

What in the hell what that?
If the guy is truly doing something at those consoles, give him a theramin and see what he does with it.
Dub, you've met and know lots of musicians, like Utah Philips and Art Thieme, so I assume you've met this gentleman as well. Was he a nice guy? Was he willing to share his talent?

Our Rachel has decided that most pop music is too boring. I was treated to a half hour of Mongolian throat singing last night. It was pretty repetitive.

But creativity made a pass on it. I suppose Allan is right about the Hedrix comparison; at least at the fan appreciation level. But it goes to show that it's the Entertainment Business; not the Music Business. The purpose is to get people to want to get up, and go out, and spend money. Everything else is secondary.
