I wondered how long it would take you to bring John Stewart into it.

All the options of the plans are moot; the goal is to avoid the penalty, not gain insurance. So the insurance company gets at least $6000/year/tax payer (no matter who pays, an insurance co gets at least that much) and this is going to somehow magically make healthcare more affordable?

Oh yes and let us not forget that we have to incriminate ourselves on our income taxes. I was REQUIRED to either lie or penalize myself on my tax return this year. I believe that violates my 5th amendment rights against self-incrimination. But I'm not stupid enough to fight it. I paid my penalty and now I'll shut my mouth.

Please accept this as a serious question, which it is. Has anyone on this forum benefited from Obamacare? If so, how did you benefit? Sure. I have insurance now and I didn't have it for almost 3 years. Now if I were to have a catastrophic mishap or illness, I would have no more than $12,000 out of pocket per year. Up until 2010 I was paying just about $1K per month for $10,000 deductible insurance that had virtually no pay-out beyond a catastrophic safety net. I now have the same safety net, but at this point the better-off here and nationally are paying for it (actually, nobody is paying for it. Like every single other well-intentioned move to the left, we have used credit to spare ourselves the internal fight over paying for it). The premiums haven't gone down. The policy I chose is a bare-bones bronze with a $6,000 deductible per, but the premium you guys are paying for (on your tab) is still $14K per year.

Please accept this as a serious question, which it is. Has anyone on this forum benefited from Obamacare? If so, how did you benefit? For me speaking as someone who pays the premium completely out of pocket the best thing about Obamacare is the elimination of preexisting conditions. I've got some typical medical issues for overweight and 50 and before Obamacare my choices were getting limited and complicated and I even had some private carriers say "no thanks". I think I would have been in no man's land in that 50-60 year old range hoping I made it until Medicare. As far as will single payer ever happen? Never underestimate the peoples desire for free shit. I think it's inevitable personally.

If through an exchange, has it actually paid for any care and what's your deductible? Mary's paid for a couple of lab tests but everything else was either applied to deductible or just denied.

Well, my current plan is pre Obamacare and I'm grandfathered in and at the beginning of this year I elected to stay there despite paying slightly more for less. $5,000 general deductible and secondary $10,000 deductible tied to 2 specific preexisting conditions at the time the policy was revised 3 years ago. It copays for nothing though I do get some reduced cost benefit on prescriptions. In 5 years the premium has gone from something like $280 to now $420 a month for nothing more than catastrophic piece of mind. Sandra and Tyler are recently uninsured and subject to the penalty so I am making the switch and we are all going in on a Silver family plan that I'll be paying something like $800 a month for of which $390 is tied to my stats. So my premium is down $30 a month and I now have a single $2,500 deductible and some pre deductible co pay on prescriptions and certain preventive procedures. So on paper it's definitely more for less. Hoping like hell it works out, but it's the best current way to get us all insured.

No subsidy that I'm aware of or that is clearly stated. Sandra is handling the paperwork and I just sign the check. The quoted monthly premium starts with an 8 but I thinks it's something like $860 mo. We just submitted the paperwork so should have the actual rate within the next few days.

Senator Cruz may not be as smart as people seem to think he is. He apparently doesn't understand that repealing Obamacare would mean that tens of millions of people would be without insurance again. Or maybe he just doesn't care about them. He certainly didn't feel bad about costing the rest of us $26 billion by shutting down the government over Obamacare. I think it would be best if Senator Cruz and his family had no insurance at all. If he really believes what he's been saying publicly (he doesn't, of course) then he should have the balls to go through what millions of other families will go through if he gets his way with healthcare. We have here a neat compilation of anti-conservative memes: 1. Conservatives are dumb. "Senator Cruz may not be as smart as people seem to think he is. He apparently doesn't understand that repealing Obamacare would mean that tens of millions of people would be without insurance again." 2. They're mean & heartless, too. "Or maybe he just doesn't care about them." 3. Just looking out for themselves & their rich fat-cat buddies. Don't care about the little guy. " He certainly didn't feel bad about costing the rest of us $26 billion by shutting down the government over Obamacare." 4. They're disingenuous & insincere. "If he really believes what he's been saying publicly (he doesn't, of course)" Nice "discussion".

I didn't think that you were going to take everything I said about Cruz as a personal attack on you and all conservatives. I'm sorry you took it that way, but you were wrong in reading yourself into my comments. Conservatives as a whole may show some of the some traits, or maybe I should say hints of the traits, but there is no uniformity. There are plenty of smart conservatives. We have some pretty smart ones here. There are compassionate conservatives. There are non-egotistical conservatives. There are honest conservatives. And of course there are dumb, egotistical, insensitive and disingenuous conservatives. I've never met you face to face but from what I know of you I'd have to credit you with mostly admirable traits. Cruz, not so much. I think he represents the very worst of what conservatives may have to offer. To top it off, and this has nothing to do with the conservative/liberal divide, I don't think he believes most of what he's saying. (The Obamacare thing just seems to be such a perfect example, and it came right on the heels of him talking about repealing the law.) I think he could just as easily have adopted liberal platforms, blown them all out of proportion, and risen to the top of the Democratic party as quickly as he did the Republican party, leaving Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders looking like stunned right wingers in the process. I think Cruz would be dangerous as a President. But I don't think he stands even a remote chance of getting elected, so I'm not too worried about that happening. I'm being straight with you, Evan. I'm sorry you thought I was talking about you. Cruz is an anomaly and it was only Cruz that I was talking about.

Cruz has too much in common with Obama to win this time. I won't be too surprised if he gets the VP spot though. We already tried an amateur for 8 years. We need someone with management experience, maybe Walker. He's already been raked over the leftist coals a couple of times.
Meanwhile, there are about 20 possible Republican candidates now so don't use up all your venom on Cruz. You may need it later. Maybe Cruz is just being a good soldier and getting all the Democrat shit up on the table so the real candidate doesn't have to deal with it. That would get him the VP spot.

If even half of the résumé John posted is true then Cruz is one very smart man. I don't think even his most ardent detractors can argue that he is stupid. I think he's a new guy that doesn't see any reason to spend thirty years in the Senate to gain enough cred to run. He sees that jumping into the spotlight is usually a good career move and he goes for it. I also think he truly believes that his political philosophy is the way to get this country back on track… his track.
I believe that he is mistaken about what this country should be doing. I think handing leadership to Cruz and his ilk would be a great mistake. At the same time, I strongly suspect that a large part of what any President does is try to make what the government is doing look as though it was somehow intended. I think it very unlikely that anyone taking office will steer the country in any very radical direction.
