The J & Lonnie show was admirably informal, musically adventurous, and artistically successful. The Little Theater is indeed a smallish house, but as the (fuzzy, inadequate phone-camera) picture shows*, it has a real stage and serious lights, along with a good sound system (not audible in a photo). Both sets were warmly received by an audience of about 40 that probably swelled to 50 or more by the time J started his set. (There was a town sesquicentennial play rehearsal that overlapped with the concert.) Lonnie makes a theater feel like his living room and complicated arrangements look easy. J's stage presence is just as direct and conversational--it was especially interesting to watch him ease us from familiarly-melodic mode into the contemporary/avante-garde pieces that are his specialty. I think his execution alone could have carried them, but he framed them by talking about the advantages of performing music by living composers that he can call up and talk to. He used Bill's Martin for the first few tunes and then deployed his Parker Fly and a flotilla of pedals and delays and interocitors and TARDIS spare parts for the hairy part of the program. Then he and Lonnie finished with a pair of off-the-cuff duets on Martin and Goodall products. * Click on it for a more-than-postage-stamp view. It's still fuzzy, but bigger.

Patti snapped this one, and captured video of the duet. If sound quality passes muster, I will post it here erelong.

Laffing aloud here over the simple, uncluttered stage that simple acoustic instruments allow.

(Notice also how a smiling J is sitting on the happy-mask side, while a grimacing L is sitting on the sad-mask side.)

Wish I could have been there! I loved the concert Giacomo gave us in Portland and would love to hear Lonnie in concert. Nice review Russell.

#taller Great to meet Jeff and a fraction of his family tonight. The Midwest has been good to me, no doubt!

Sweet.
I mean the video, not Jeff.
I mean, Jeff can be sweet, too, but...
I'll go away now.
