I just looked up Okotoks, and now the sign seems rather hubristic.

I'm a bit disappointed. That paper has now done two stories about a town where there are a number of things to do and they only mentioned one; visiting the big rock. I mourn the passing of the "who, what, when, where, how" of journalism.
I looked up Okotoks too. They are the largest town in Alberta. Certainly that's something to be proud of.
I was very surprised to find on the town's official website a photograph of a large clock sitting in the middle of a raised flower bed. Both the clock and the flowerbed seem to be exact duplicates of the one that sits right in the middle of Menomonee Falls, WI, where I live. Makes me wonder if the village officials here visited Okotoks in order to learn the secrets of their success.

Why on earth they would even try to promote themselves as a tourist destination, I don' t know.
We went to Alberta a few years ago, and I travelled to Edmonton and Calgary a fair bit on business. It's really something to come out of the mountains, and hit the great plains, and just drive and drive and drive, in a very straight line.

They stole our state slogan! Iowa has a slogan? "Pretty good cutlet, hey?" Is that it?

They stole our state slogan! The Iowa state slogan on the Welcome to Iowa sign used to be, "A Place to Grow." I was always tempted to spray paint the word "corn" after it.

We can do better:
Okotoks: Hey, it's not Newark!
Okotoks: Gateway to DeWinton.

Look for more quirky small town subversive advertising campaigns

Although if you want the really remote stuff, keep going into Wyoming. And if you want the really, really, really remote stuff, keep going through Nevada. Okotoks looks like a charming place, and I am sure there are a number of things to do there.

If they have either a Culvers or a McDonalds, either would be a good place to stop for a restroom break and coffee or ice cream.
