The day after the Obama's talk on tv , the 2 gun shops in Vinton sold most of their stock. Now we have people running around with guns that they never have shot at least once . One tiny gal bought a .357 revolver that I told her was not the gun for her to buy. She called me later and wanted to know if she could sell it to me as it hurt her wrist. I told her not to buy it. I'm sure Doug has run into a few like her. It's getting crazy out there. In 2010 1 in 72 had a gun permit in Iowa. Now it's 1 in 12.

I used to have a S&W .357 Magnum. Best factory trigger you'd ever know, but that thing would punish you.

How do Iowa gun laws work? When you say 1 in 12 have a permit, what does that mean? Are you talking concealed carry permits, or is there something else involved?

If she throws in a smart phone, Mike Wonder might buy it.

The answer to a hard-kicking .357 is to just shoot .38 Specials in it, with bullets weighing 110-125 grains.
The thing to be stocking up on right now is ammunition and reloading components. And many folks I know are doing just that.

Back when I was shooting 100 or more rounds per day, ammoman.com was my friend. I've got so much stored up, and shoot so infrequently anymore, I'll probably never run out.

I don't know about Iowa, but in Minnesota one needs a "Permit To Purchase" to acquire handguns and rifles that look scary. The PTP is free, is good for one year, and is issued by your local chief of police or if you live outside city limits, your country sheriff. On the other hand, a Permit To Carry costs $100 (in addition to training taken before application, which costs $50-$250), the PTC lasts for five years, is issued by the same bodies and can be used as a Permit To Purchase.

Iowa has carry only permits. May people in Iowa think their permit in for concealed carry. No where on the permit is the word concealed. Wear it out in the open or under your shirt. You can get a permit to purchase also. The 1 in 12 is for a carry permit.

It seems to me that along with background checks, we ought to be enforcing a few YTFSTBAG (you’re too fucking stupid to buy a gun) rules.

S&W revolvers have good factory triggers. My daughters 38 (Model 64)shoots 2in groups at 50yds, Chris' .357(Model 66) not as good but keeps them under 3in and my .38 Chief(Model 36) will stay under 3in. That's me shooting, But Chris can keep hers under 5in at 50yds and Mikel Anne can shoot here .38 as well as I can.
I agree and disagree with Kris. Load .38 specials in the .357 but use the 158 lead bullets, standard cop load up through the 50s and into the early 60s. It will do the job and not shoot through the bag guy to hit someone else and won't go through most exterior walls or car bodies.
S&W revolvers are the best guns for novice handgun people.

It's an interesting study in unintended consequences and human behavior. Want less guns, pass law, gun sales go nuts.
We have a local company that makes bullets. Obama gets elected and their output hockey sticks. Every time the gun debate ratchets up their out put hockey sticks. I wish you liberals would try to outlaw doors.

Seems to be the thing. I bought seven guns yesterday at Hardware Hank. They had a sign up saying Obama was going to confiscate everyone's guns his last week in office.
Seven might have been excessive. Anyone want to buy a nice semi-auto Ruger .22 pistol? (kind of looks like the handguns the Germans carried in WWII?
(actually, that is the handgun I do have. Dad bought it and put it in a drawer. I just found it earlier this year (forgot about it, thought it was lost). Is it worth anything? Is it good for anything? (other than shooting your eye out)

(other than shooting your eye out) Depends on when your dad bought it. If the hawk on the grip is red it's worth real money. Otherwise it's a nice .22 for .22 uses.

It's at the farm. I'll check when I get back there. I suppose he bought it late sixties or early seventies.

Paul - not sure if serious. I think you are describing a Ruger Mark pistol of which there were were MKI, II, and now III. One of the best mass produced .22 pistols around. I can hit milk jugs at 100 yards with my MKIII Hunter

I learned enough shooting it know I can't hit a damn thing with a pistol. It's a shotgun with ear plugs or nothing for me. (or nice sighted in scope and a gun rest, and with ear plugs).
Excuse me, Mr. Burglar. I got this flinch. Can you just stay there until I locate my ear protectors and shells...oh, and shotgun?

Mine is all black, grip, stock and barrel. I have a hard time believing Dad would have spent more than $75 or $100 for it. He probably shot it twice. I have probably shot it five times. Gus seven or eight.
