The hits just keep on coming. Tourists assaulted on streets once thought to be relatively safe; two recent incidents of cars hosed with gunfire while driving down the main roads, the usual shootings and stabbings, and now one of our crews that got caught in between someone with a gun and his intended target. Thank God he didn't shoot.
I have a nice long contract for work in the City just full of fine print. I don't know what will happen if we refuse to go back but I know what would happen if I forced the guys and- God forbid- something happened to one of them. They- or their loved ones- would crucify us. As they should in that case.
At least those monuments are gone.

It seems it is getting worse by the day. I'm beginning to read reports in the N.O. edition of our paper that the Times-Picayune is ignoring. Troubling reports of crime moving into areas they've never been before. Incredibly, Mayor Landrieu's name is being floated as a presidential candidate. Meanwhile, crime has escalated out of control, highest murder rate in the US, and societal order is just about gone.

That's my question. Is there a reason for this turn of events?

That's my question. Is there a reason for this turn of events? Bad policing. Incredibly bad governance. A huge criminal population with nothing to do but carjack, rob tourists, collect their dole and be bad. It got insanely worse during the wild west period after the disaster, abated somewhat, and now has steadily grown worse. I recommend the Really Great Read called Nine Lives by Dan Baum www.amazon.com/Nine-Lives-Death-Life-Orleans-ebook/dp/B001NLL482/ref=sr_1_61?ie=UTF8&qid=1499129012&sr=8-61&keywords=hurricane+katrina+booksIt won't explain what's happening now, but it sheds light on the general situation. Great read. I have a theory (shared by some others) that, on the policing front, they've given up on much of the "little" stuff. This emboldens the substantial criminal element and they've become increasingly brazen with the big stuff. The NOPD seems powerless to make a dent. They're overwhelmed. Meanwhile the mayor has focused his attention on Confederate monuments, telling the folks at Essence Fest this weekend to "stay woke" and other useless and meaningless bullshit that does nothing. It's frustrating. I love New Orleans. We're headed there in the morning. Christine wants to take her friend Debbie there later in the week and I fear for their safety, even in the previously safe zones.

Evan, did you see the video of the thugs doing wheelies on dirt bikes and ATVs thru the French Quarter and passing the cop who didn't even look at them? My B-I-L who used to be a Slidell cop says the orders have come down not to give chase or try to apprehend. They are total scofflaws and do not fear the police. If they did give chase it would probably morph into a running gun battle. Very crazy. Wild West redux.

A friend, from our theater group, moved here from New Orleans about a year ago. He says New Orleans has passed Memphis for it's crime rate. That's pretty bad. Even the nice and more affluent areas of Memphis have become increasingly dangerous. When we have business there, we try to be in and out of town before sundown. Even the daylight hours are no guarantee of safety.
Much of this goes back to the city government of both cities. They are very corrupt and their only interest is self interest. They are known for taking "kickbacks" and graft, while issuing contracts to their friends for projects funded by federal grants. Meanwhile, the same people they promised to help (mostly working class or poor) are the people that suffer most while their neighborhoods become war zones.

"Per Capita, we've had more killings than Chicago."
Looks like we need to step up our game. . . . , Actually the Chicago problems are gang related n the same neighborhoods. Certainly a nasty situation. But tourists in the popular areas, and residents in safe neighborhoods remain blissfully untouched by most all of it. It's really gang war in the hoods. Tragic and sad and outrageous for sure. But the majority of the populace goes blissfully about their lives unaffected. That's probably a big part of the problem. The larger safe-and-sound portion of the community doesn't comprehend (or care much) for what happens in the hood. Just don't go near there.

And furthermore; all the police body-cam shootings are demoralizing the cops in big cities. If they are trying to stop a perp, who is younger and faster and more athletic than them, how are they supposed to catch the guy? Historically they shoot them in the back while they are running away and claim, "He turned and threatened me. I thought it was a gun." The videos prove otherwise. So, what are they supposed to do? Make chase on foot after a young track star? Through bad neighborhoods? It's a no win situation.
So now they don't pursue.

A thought about police fitness and demographics: If we're going to miltarize the cops, we might want to consider applying military standards of physical fitness on the ones in the field. Col. Paul, ret., might have some actual information on the theory and practice of such standards. (From my safe perch on the living-room sofa, our deployed guys in the Middle East look a lot healthier than the 40-something cops I encounter. The younger ones, though, look like they might be up to a foot chase.)
Policies, politics, and rules of engagement, of course, are separate cans of worms.

The criminals are already militarized. Meet force with overwhelming force. Let them know they can't win no matter what. It's the only thing that works with people who don't give one shit.

Too late. The criminals are already militarized. Yeah, but this much? No, thank goodness. But I'm all for the cops being outfitted to that level when the situation calls for it.
