PS- I've been scrounging to find a photo for the cover of the new CD project. The title being "Carnivals, and other Tragedies." I took some Carnival pictures myself this summer. But they weren't working out. So, last night I was scrounging the web. And I found several photos on Alamy web site that I could purchase rights to pretty cheaply. I think I'm going with this one. I can have the upper right background faded and put the title text in there. I love the festive colors, yet angstful look on the horses faces. Nice photo!

My musical goal for 2018 is to rearrange the presets on my XM radio so that all of my favorites are on the same page.

Set your sights higher than that, Rob. You brought down the house at Ijam last year.

As long as he doesn't do away with Bigfoot, I'm good with anything.

I thought I saw Bigfoot tearing the door off the Mercantile one night. Turned out to be somebody else. A very nice guy and actually very un-Bigfoot like in many ways. I still think the Iowa Bigfoot is out there prowling the night, though.

I've set this year's goals too high:
Be able to play one jazz number almost as good as Russell.
Be able to pick one tune almost as good as DrLJ.
Be able to thumb pick one song almost as good as Dub.
Be able to write one song almost as good as Marshall.
Be able to live with the fact that none of the previous are going to happen.

While waiting some emailed direction from a client, I picked up a guitar and plunked out 2 cover songs I've been interested in.
Chasing Cars, by Snow Patrol. - Very very easy song. basically 3 chords. I could hear them before I started playing. My fingers knew exactly where to go. It'll take a little effort to keep it interesting enough through a whole song without an orchestra and harmony singers. But it can probably be done.
But THEN, I plunked out Heat Wave, by Martha and the Vandellas. And I'm off to the races on that one. Right in my wheelhouse chordwise and vocally. What a hoot to walk around the house singing, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh ooh Whoa !

I tend to look at things from the POV of, could I make a nice finger style arrangement of that, and have it standalone. Most often the answer is no; certainly Chasing Cars wouldnât work. Doyle Dykes does a nice job of U2 songs, but he put a bunch of them together in a medley. I have always thought that Iâd like to arrange Don Quixote by Gordon Lightfoot for finger style. Always been one of my favourites by him. It has a great melody, and some nicely fingerpicked sections. I also love the lyrics in this. Just read his biography; you forget how many great songs the man wrote.

Except there's something compelling about it. It just lingers on this repetetive melancholy melody line over 3 chords, then it resolves in a simple 4th line. Over and over. Tension, more tension, even more tension, release. - (Rinse and repeat.) The tension melody lines are the same. It's the chords underneath that slide from A, Amaj7, D2/F# that create the increasing melancholy with the repeated melody line. 4 measures repeated ad nauseum. It alternates between passive and aggressive tones. But the melody and chords stay the same throughout. But yet, there's something compelling about the whole thing; wallowing in the unsettled space.
