I have always thought that I’d like to arrange Don Quixote by Gordon Lightfoot for finger style. I'll show you how I play it when we meet.

I used to play Don Quixote. I love Lightfoot's songs, and have tried many of them. He has had a couple of outstanding guitarists in his band over the years; they always play the right thing at the right time.

I'd like to be able to do a decent version of this one.

I’ve said it before, that’s my favourite JT tune. I would never have figured he would play it quite like that. And I’m not sure what benefit he gets from the digital contortions; I think you can pull the fingers when played “normally.” But then he’s a genius, so what do I know?

1. Get better with jazz chords. 2. Restring and tune my old autoharp. 3. Try to find a regular or semi-regular gig. Hey, it looks like I may be about to take care of #3. Still working out the details, but it looks like a monthly gig at a local restaurant may be about to happen. I'm really excited!

I played his songs without fingering that way -- and I'll never finger the D the way he does (though, if he does the A the way he does, then in the same manner that the jazz chord "grips" serve the function of keeping the root, 3rd and 5th under the same respective fingers, I guess even that has a benefit. But once I learned that he plays the A the way he does, I started doing the same. He's right. For his songs, with his particular hammer ons and pull offs, it does work better.

I manage to get the pull-offs and hammer-ons pretty fine without the weird fingerings. I don't think I could teach myself to do it JT's way after all these years of playing it otherwise.

Might get lengthy, but this would be a good thread to pin.....where we could track progress to the goals, seek advice, and encourage.

Why wear a boring Gordon Lightfoot shirt-jacket when you could wear a David Crosby jacket?

I'd like to be able to do a decent version of this one. Well, I wouldn't care if I played it like James if I could sing it like James. Basically my trouble with all his tunes. We're both baritones but his range is just slightly higher. Love the guy though.

Why wear a boring Gordon Lightfoot shirt-jacket when you could wear a David Crosby jacket? I knew a couple of guys with jackets like that back in the late 60s. They used to make a big production about swinging around so the those damned fringe things would go whirling. I also saw CSN in Chicago and Crosby was wearing something like that on stage. I found those jackets amusing.

Why wear a boring Gordon Lightfoot shirt-jacket when you could wear a David Crosby jacket? These jackets were so popular that the government finally had to ban hunting Bo Dereks for the use of their scalps in making them. They have yet to come up with a suitable synthetic substitute. That's why you almost never see these jackets anymore.

I think LJ stil has his though. And Bo Derek hasn't been spotted in Indiana in years. Coincidence?
