I sometimes golf with a guy a couple of years younger than me who had a triple bypass a few years ago. He tries to play every day, plays 9 holes usually and walks them. He's still a longer hitter than I am and putts better. He also has a couple of cigarettes during the round. He considers them a guilty pleasure and has no intentions of stressing himself while trying to quit.

Wow I missed the fact he was having a triple. That’s a big deal. Having your chest cracked hurts!Interesting that you say that, Terry.....I've done that twice now and neither time did I take any pain meds. Nothing beyond some Tylenol for my achy, breaky back. Stiff after laying on it for 10 days while I had the balloon pump in. My two hernia repairs and two shoulder surgeries were significantly more painful. I remember when my dad had a quintuple bypass.....felt fabulous after healing. Doug.....do you have any shirts that go with a dark turquoise? If you have the same sternum protection vest I had, that's the only color the handles come in. Wow, maybe things are better now. I did a year of cardiovascular surgery in 72 before going into ortho and I remember how much those midline sternotomy patients hurt. They must be getting better at it. I will revise my thinking. Thanks Don!

Good luck Doug. I concur with Doc's prognosis. Not that I know anything about it, but it sounds good to me.

Being the evil rat bastard that I am I was thinking of texting Doug this. : Doug, you think it hurts now, just wait until you try to laugh:
But maybe I should give him a few days to recover first.

Cinched my sternum firmly and tied it shut with 9 pieces of titanium wire, like bread twisties. Main incision was glued shut. I think the glue is mostly responsible for the pain free surgical site. I glue split calluses in the winter, and pain is gone immediately.

And good to see you again, James. Well, not "see" exactly. The Norse have a word for it, "skaolhusensnorgan".

Got two texts from Doug's phone:
'still at hospital. will be here until at least the am'
then about 4 hours later:
'red coffee cup'
I'd guess the drugs are pretty good. or my phone/cell service is worse than I knew it was.
I'm guessing we wont be playing bridge this evening.
