Chris just called me. Doug passed away in his sleep this afternoon at 3:15PM MST (Arizona Time) I'm heartbroken.
This is something he sent to me 10 days ago, before he went into the hospital in case of this event:
Goodbye to the Sounhole
To each and everyone here on the Soundhole and those who have left. I love you one and all and over the last almost 20 yrs, from the days of TTT on, you have been the group of friends I'm most happy to have known.
No one needs to morn my death, if you feel the need to do something play a song or plant a tree.
Proud to have been my parents son. Proud to have been a Marine. Proud to call the Soundhole people my friends.
Stephen Douglas Heard 3-5-49
(and Bill, it is EXACTLY as he wrote it, I think he left the spelling error just for you)
I'll remmeber all the laughter and all that he did for me.
sorry this just sucks...

Well, shit. Best-natured anarchist I ever met. Glad to have known him, and will miss his rants, which I never could figure out how seriously to take.

Here's Doug, in a contemplative moment, from IJam 2017. I am going to miss this gruff but warm-hearted rabble rouser. A great deal. I am SO sorry to read this news—really thought he was on the mend after his heart surgery. Speed you on your journey, Doug.

As a postscript, I last saw Doug when Katherine and Larry were visiting in March 2016. He drove down from Kingman to see them. He drove back the same day. It's not a short trip. He was the same old Doug. May he rest in peace.

A smile memory. From last summer at David's house, with Doug and Chris and David's friend guitar player from the neighborhood. Doug performing the song " Itty Bitty Titties". It was so wrong, in so many ways, but it was pure Doug. Sigh.

Well, shit. Best-natured anarchist I ever met. Glad to have known him, and will miss his rants, which I never could figure out how seriously to take. I remember when I was a newbie here reacting to one of Doug's rants to the effect that politicians start illegal wars in order to gain power, and the casualties amounted to murder. I posted that it seemed to me an odd strategy to try to gain favor with your constituents by killing them off. Somebody else posted, "Welcome to Doug's world." Then I got it. Whatever shaped his world views, and obviously being in the Marines was a big influence, he held his beliefs honestly and with a good heart.

Well crap. The guy could drive me nuts, but it was in such an intentional, good-hearted and humorous way that in the end I did love him for it. He was a real character with a real heart, and he took the punches as well as he dealt them. He will be sorely missed.
Dennis, we all know that you've been friends with Doug for years, we know what he meant to you, and we all feel sorry for your loss, which is a personal one. We all hope wish you the best in this trying time.
And I can say without asking others that we're all thinking of Chris as well. I'm quite sure there are all kinds of thoughts, good-wishes and prayers headed her way.

Don just told me. I am so sad. I loved Doug a lot - even though we never agreed about politics. We agreed, and I am sure that we all agree, that Doug was a fine person, who loved honestly and passionately. I was so pleased that he visited while Larry and I were visiting Don a few years ago. I can still see him, still feel the warm hug. I think I'll just go cry now.

I am so saddened to hear this. There's hardly been a Soundhole day in the past 15 that Doug wasn't the first person I woke to. He was as intractable in his love as he was in his views.
