When I first visited the island I now call home there weren't any squirrels (or so few that they didn't impinge on my awareness). They've been moving north from the ferry landing for the last 10 years. Today I found one on the bird feeder. Watching ecology happen is sometimes depressing.
continue with your day.

It does not need to be depressing. Think of it as a chance to hone your skills in animal husbandry and squirrel training or perhaps marksmanship, cooking, skinning and tanning.

A Hoosier would see this as a dinner option. Nothing gets a Hoosier ready to eat faster than a free range chicken of the trees.

I can speak from first hand experience that the Crossman Varminator is a suitable implement for such situations. Out of the box, the trigger is shite, but that's easily corrected.

This reminds me Cornflake’s old thread about tree rats that were actually rats. Or maybe they were roof rats. Anyway, search doesn’t seem to turn it up.

Am I the only one who's suddenly hungry? When are you not hungry? All a hungry Hoosier needs is a rock to bring down a squirrel.

Yeah but… Just imagine the envy of your friends and neighbors when they learn you have a Nitro Piston power plant in that thing.

We actually have tree rats and I thought this post was about them. They'll be crushed to know that it wasn't.
I ate squirrel as a kid, a memento of meals during the depression.

Nitro Piston. One of the all time great Chicago bluesmen. He played Kingston Mines back in late 69. We used to watch him perform and we would run across the street to the Barleycorn and bring him back a burger, fries and a 6 pack of whatever was cheapest. He would show us blues riffs and, if he was in a good mood, which wasn’t often, he would let us try out his big J-200. He always said Rev Gary Davis got the idea of playing a 200 from him. Too bad about how it all ended and I have no idea what happened to that J-200. It is still out there somewhere, I guess.

The scoped/laser pellet rifle is nice but I'm more of a .22 shorts in a lever or pump action rifle kind of guy. Get a few of the little buggers before they have a chance to get away.

Sure but the Crosman Varminator comes complete with a “Barrel integrated, sound suppression system.” .22 shorts in a rifle don't need a suppressor. My Mossberg will hold 20 rounds and you can down the little trees rats as fast as you can cock the lever. I don't shoot gray squirrels*, they don't do any harm, but red squirrels** are destructive little shits, they gets kilt. *These guys fall under the "If I ain't gonna eat it I ain't gonna kill it" rule. ** Varmints, previous rule does not apply, but only ones that come on the property are in danger.

I agree, but the difference for me here is I can shoot the air rifle legally inside the city limits. Can't legally shoot a fire arm.
