I”ve never thought of it. Rates are crazy enough as it is; you know those luthier/repair types. Rapacious pirates, all of them. When I see mine drive by in his Ferrari, I know I’m paying too much.

Better than a tip is spreading the news of the great work he or she did.

No. Don't tip my auto mechanic or the guy that fixed my AC either. Or the guy that bags my groceries.
But I figure that's okay. Nobody tips me either.

I”ve never thought of it. Rates are crazy enough as it is … I disagree. I don’t think the rates are high at all. Rates not only need to cover labor and parts but the costs associated with maintaining a shop area. If the luthier is self employed, rates must also cover all the time spent on activities other than productive shop time. If you depend on your guitar you also have to depend on your luthier. You don’t look for lowest cost solutions, you look for the best possible outcome.

If the bill comes to a dollar amount plus change customers will frequently even it out up. Seriously? A fraction of a dollar or a ten spot on a six or eight hundred dollar bill?

I got a $30 tip on a $120 bill just the other day. Then again, it was Henry who I do a LOT of work for and I treat him right.

I don’t do many jobs that big. I will get a $5-10 tip on occasion, other clients will write a check for the exact amount even if it is only $15.29.

Thanks for the replies. I honestly never thought of it either, as I have seldom had need. All of it makes sense, I just don't know if he likes Irish whisky or Bourbon...

In Millring’s neighborhood they tip cows. They sneak up on a sleeping heifer and tip it onto its side. Then they laugh hysterically, drink some more Boone’s Farm Apple Wine and go off looking for another sleeping cow. Hoosiers. What can I say?
